I thought it was the rising cost of heads.

That's how you become an expert in anything. It is literally like pieces of a puzzle until you are complete. 😊

Great advice, now more than ever for sure. Back when I was learning in the 1990s it was just about books and some VHS tapes and of course records but now there’s just so much information out thereg it’s very easy to gloss over things quickly and not go deep. It’s also why a teacher is so important in providing focus

You hit the spot at least for me. Haven’t mastered one but moving on. Great advice

As a 3 year amateur, what helped me get better was just finding that one song you loved listening to, and just mastering it to the T until you know you can play. It was productive, and also super fun. Some personal favourites were Generator by Foo Fighters and Shy Away by Twenty One Pilots

It was a little easier to stay focused back in the 80's when I started. Starting on a practice pad was normal, my teacher gave me that Frank Arsenault record to learn the Standard 26 rudiments and rudimental solos...didn't have the internet as a distraction. Then moved to drum set and gigging. But then again, there is great info on the internet today. Ehh, best thing to do is just follow a guy like Stephen Taylor or Stephen Clark online or find a good in person teacher and you'll be fine

I started learning drums 6 months ago. When I am at home I often try out to do different rhythms with my sticks. I will now focus on learning just one until I am really good at it. Thank you for the advise 🙂

Ive legit layed in my bed all day with wooden board practicing since this morning just on my double pedal rudiments and exercises. Ive gotten so much better its insane and im not at my kit. Practice 24/7 lol

Yup, totally agree! Wise words. Sure, you can practice for a gig, learn songs or whatever, but if you want to increase your skill, I've become convinced there's just no other way. There are no shortcuts!!

I honestly thought it was just age. After I turned 30, my legs just won't listen to me anymore. Things just don't feel right anymore, like everything about me is just numb when I'm behind the kit. Where's the joy and fire to sit behind the kit? It's gone lol

I heard every word you said, and understood none of it. I however will not talk about how to learn drums because it was my 4th insrument, the only thing i will say is if you have an electric kit, play it unplugged quite a lot, dynamics are never right on e kits.

And develop the habit of drumming on your legs, a solid habit of doing that can give you 1-8 hours of practise every day. Every time i have a song stuck in my head, which is near enough all the time, im drumming it on my legs.

A bit tough if you get 30-40 covers songs to learn for a gig !

Would you say that focus should be on one rudiment at a time then?

Chops on the internet are ruining the fundamentals.
