Another note, think about the 173 firemen on the Titanic, they had to manually move over 600 tons of coal per day to keep the engine going. That's roughly 3.5 tons of coal shoveled per fireman a day on a £6/month salary.
The titanic expelled 100 tons of ash per day into the ocean

I was stationed on a ship with a huge diesel engine like this. Not this big, but big enough that you could fit a couple of guys in a cylinder. It was an eight cylinder and had a max RPM of 124. There was no reduction gear between it and the main propeller shaft. It was direct drive and in order for the ship to go into reverse, the engine spun backwards. Our ship was built in the 60s, and the engine only put out 12, 000 HP. Still enough HP to move our 16, 000 ton displacement ship at 18 knots flat out. Cruising speed was 16 knots.

You know you have a big engine when it has its own walkways and railings. A 300 ton crankshaft. That's completely insane

Hellcat owners gonna be mad when they hear about this

Add racing flames.
That'll easily get its redline all the way of to like 3k rpm

That’s a huge engine and it makes enough torque to move the earth. Damn I didn’t know anything made a few million foot pounds of torque.

What sort of deific lathe did they mill that crankshaft upon?

A video on turning the crankshaft would be worth watching.

It’s amazing that they can cast and machine those parts that large.

had no idea container ships travelled at 27 knots, i thought they would cruise at like 18 knots

I can’t imagine how they’d tighten the bolts on everything

I've looked for a video of this engine running, and could not find one, so thank you for showing this!

I had no idea there was any engine this big. Stunning.

That's why I'm a diesel guy. Diesels power the world and with 5 million in torque I'd say she's a beast

I bet someone here is thinking of a way to put this in their Honda.
