Excellent breakdown. Ichigo could have negged Byakuya right off the bat if he wanted to, but just coldly slitting his opponent's throat wasn't how he wanted to win. Ichigo was still a child, and always struggled to finish off his opponents. He's not a cold killer, and never has been. I'd say that Ichigo could have won even easier if he hadn't been cocky and tried to fight against Byakuya's Bankai with only his Shikai at first, which caused him to take unnecessary damage.

Byakuya got lucky he didn't face Vasto Lorde ichigo otherwise his body would be in bits right now

Lets not forget that ichigo went into this fight heavily injured from his fight with renji and Zaraki while also just training for 3 days straight.

The solution to not break his body was actually pretty simple as shown by hollow Ichigo, just throw multiple getsuga tensho to release the pressure.

Ichigo didnt want to kill Byakuya, he wanted to beat him and leave him jist like Byakuya did to him on their first encounter.

It was even said during the fight thay Ichigo's real opponent was Byakuya's pride in following the rules of soul society. Thats why Ichigo couldnt just kill Byakuya, he had to break his will to defend the very rules that would force him to hunt his sister.

The point of Ichigo going easy was to break Byakuya's way towards the rules and not to kill him as he showed several times that he could kill him if he wanted.

I always figured Byakuya went easy on him because he wanted Ichigo to win to save Rukia

Many people overlook the fact of Buyakua not going all out against Ichigo either. His heart was full of doubt and despite cold attitude he never wanted to see his sister getting executed. "In your place I would be fighting against such rules" - in a post battle exchange Ichigo said something which Byakuya wanted but had no courage or conviction to do.

He slowed down because of byakuya's domain.

Ichigo even states that the area is slowing him down.


Byakuya saw that his bankai was pure stats so he went for a move that hinders stats but looses most of his petals.

It's also how ichigo is so much more impressive in the soul society- he didn't use the combat pass to become a soul reaper

That fight just had everything and with how amazing the Seireitei Arc itself is, it's like, what more could you want?

Captain's were nerfed for Ichigo's sake. There's no way Ichigo at that time vs Kenpachi could realistically beat him.

Ichigo could have ended the fight right there... but only because Byakuya wasn't taking him seriously. His guard was down because he still looked down on Ichigo for being a human and using a mockery of a bankai. Only when his power was proven to be legit did Byakuya finally get serious, and although Ichigo was still faster, Byakuya could react and defend himself. Remember, Ichigo tried to blitz him a second time but Byakuya caught it.

The fact that Ichigo's body couldn't handle the level of power required to fight at Byakuya's level proves that SS Bankai Byakuya is stronger than SS Bankai Ichigo

Biggest reason for Byakuya losing is the same reason for most of Ichigo's wins. They underestimate him (and a crap ton of plot armor).

In retrospect Zangetsu was holding back Ichigos development. Keeping him weak enough that he wouldnt evolve fully into a shinigami but strong enough to overcome the threat at the given moment.
