The "guitar" played by Lord's friend is called "viola caipira". It is a brazilian instrument, very popular in the farms ands ranchs.

Maybe add a little tape on the fishing reel where it hits the strings, so the timbre is softer.

This is great but some songs I'd love to hear played on that are "Cod Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, "Schools Trout" by Alice Cooper and "Sole Power" by James Brown, or anything by Salmon and Garfunkel.

Nice ingenuity, does make tremolo easier. Though the ultimate is going the Paul Gilbert/Billy Sheehan route and mount 3 picks on a variable speed power drill.
