This is the best beginners blacksmithing project, EVER

If I had to go back to when I was a brand new blacksmith, I think this would be the first project I’d make.

My first hammer eye punch was out of a harbor freight ballpeen, thing was pretty rad. But handle fitup is one of the more satisfying things in the process.

Hey, if you have the hammer head upside down it'll be easier to get the wood out of the eye

1045 does not have enough carbon to make an edged weapon. You should have forge welded a piece of high carbon into the cutting edge with a slot that is chiseled or cut in with a grinder. Oil quenching is a waste of time. Get some Cherry Red case hardening compound and use it. Simple, effective. If you had the high carbon cutting piece in then a quench would yield results.

When you do the normalization cycles, how long do you let them cool down? Until you can hold it for each cycle? Until it loses its color(the color from heat that is) or is there a specific range? Thanks!! My first project like six months ago was a ball peen hatchet! It turned out pretty good. I found some much bigger ones so I’m hoping to make a big big one next!!
