Parents forced to make impossible choice about school in pandemic

Should parents send their children back to school during a pandemic? For some, staying home isn't an option economically, while others are overwhelmed by making sure their children are learning all while working full-time themselves. Clinical psychologist Ramani Durvasula talks with CBSN anchor Tanya Rivero about what parents can do about the stress and doubt they have over this impossible choice.

I'm a teacher. My district made the wise choice to offer 100% virtual or Hybrid face to face A/B schedule that allows for kids to come every other day so our class sizes are small enough that my high school students are safely spread apart. We all wear masks and the students have been so good about it. HOWEVER... now our State (SC... the 2nd least safe State to open schools)... wants to force us to stop the A/B schedule and put them back together so classes will be crowded again. As an educator I've been taking grad classes at the same time as teaching so that I can learn to plan better lessons for the days they are at home. It's nothing like how we taught in the spring when we basically had to put together home study packets and even the computer based instruction was very impersonal. Now I can engage the students and provide real instruction even when they are at home. Pushing us back too quick to a "normal" school day will just disturb the balance we have achieved as well as endanger the health of children, families, teachers, staff, etc.

Money is so tight. It takes a lot of involvement from parents when they school at home.

The truth is single parents outweigh 2 parent households. In those 2 parent households, yes, both parents do have to work. Majority of the time due to the high cost of living. With kids going back to school and are in school, many parents have had to give up their jobs or change jobs due to this. Parents shouldn’t have to choose between a job and their children.

As a parent of a 10yr old and 15yr old boys, the sad thing is our kids are suffering from lack of socialization they received during the process of attending school at a campus.. All this time on the web and playing games, is having a negative toll on thier development! I see and hear them getting worse as the virtual learning has become longer and longer.. Just trying to get them outside for a walk/ride or run has become increasingly more difficult! This is not a critical statement of our system but one of a parent who is be coming more and more concerned of the effects of the sudden change of my boys personalities since this all started!! Not really that difficult .everyone can get a smart phone starts at 30 25 a month .I think parents are jelous there kids can stay home and go to school while the parents drive to work .maybe some parents are tired of there kids being home so this is a scapegoat.

The title to this is very sad to us. It is inferring that parents are having an impossible time being parents. Or that kids are a burden. Maybe they shouldn't have had kids. We have a, now, 4 y.o. who is bi lingual in German, starting to learn basic math because he knows his numbers in both languages, and more. He is not any smarter than any other kid, just gets quality exposure thanks to involved parents...who own a design firm, think tank, and production company working from home. Mom also works for the public schools away from home. No excuses for us, we love our child.
Maybe the approach should be the other way around, employers allow for parents to class time their kids without hassle. Or maybe people need to be honest with themselves about their ability to be quality role models to the next generation. After all, the kids may be feeling a little hurt that mom and dad don't want to help them because (fill in the blank) is more important.

Learning wether that is in a
School or not, is a life long process,
Online Internet Zoom School
is a disappointing failure,
not because of the concept,
but the technology,
the technology cannot yet give adequate
schooling at home, with grandma chasing the cat around the kitchen,
it is certainly not a Traditional School
setting,
Virtual Teachers are over stressed
by the Computer Software,
the mouse, the Computer Screen,
so keeping the kids at home is
safe, but they need to learn with
a book, pencil and paper,
like Abraham Lincoln by
oil lamp light, after daily chores,
Parents want to avoid guilt trips,
proper Schooling during
this pandemic, is not
achievable for most, the most essential skills are arithmetic and reading and writing. those three skills.
Yes the internet is full of
hackers trying to destroy the technology,
but they have limited effect on learning.
