The whacky thing about the tree-planting monoculture thing is that this lesson was learned at least 30 years ago in the west. There are numerous places where people tried the same thing with going to an area and planting huge numbers of trees. Often trees that were not particularly native to the area. And the results were as you described.

I just wanted to say that you and laowhy86 do a great job showing China as it is. I appreciate that you emphasize so many times that the real problem is CCP and their almost totalitarian policies. People in the West are too naive and they are easy pray for soft power tricks. I see it in my family and many times I had to explain how many things are done mainly for propaganda and they are not done in other countries because they make no sense in terms of economy (super fast train for example).

Actually learned about the growing fossil fuel use and monoculture forests from a college course, environmental history of China. My project was on the massive demands on the environment caused by their massive population. China's environment is an absolute mess and it doesn't appear to be getting better, as of 2021.

I saw this video about all these amazing "world first" "under budget" "ahead of schedule" bridges China had made. When they came to one connecting Hong Kong and Macau, places with free(ish) speech, suddenly it's all "but loads of workers died" "contractors didn't get paid" "corners were cut and it's not safe"... then right back into the list of how amazing all these other bridges in china were for being built so fast...
