Is The US Dollar Dying? World Reserve Currency Explained

The US Dollar has been positioned as the most powerful currency in the world for over a century now. But lately, there’s been a lot of speculation about its reign coming to an end. And it would be a big deal if the US dollar was dethroned, because for 99% of the people that are alive today, we don't know what it looks like to be in a world without this currency at the top of the global money podium. But, crazy enough, the world hasn’t always run on USD.

The US dollar was created 1792, when Congress passed the ‘Mint Act’ - at the time, it only existed in the form of coins, and paper money came decades later. The Americans needed to create their own currency to finance the Revolutionary War, and so the ‘Continental Currency’ was born. But, it would take another 129 years for it to become the world’s ‘Reserve Currency’.

Being a ‘World Reserve Currency’ means that banks around the world hold more USD than any other currency, because it’s used for the majority of international trade between any country, not just the US. But, there were other reserve currencies before the US took the position - and historically, it’s not unlikely that we’ll see another world reserve currency in the future. But what would that look like, and how soon will it happen?

Great video, you two! Really learned a lot here. By the way, would you ever consider doing an updated behind the scenes video of how you run this brand?

Why are people saying it’s to dethrone the dollar dominance. Maybe they want to trade easier like the EU/Euro. When the Euro was launched, there were no talks of dethroning the dollar

Big fan of your videos! I understand your viewership is likely heavily based in the states, but would you ever consider covering more macroeconomic topics for Canada?

Thank you for doing the video. I have a question about your FHSA video. Can I contribute to FHSA 8k the next year 2025 for example after using the money to buy the a condo in 2024.(the account should be closed in Dec 2025).
then I can transfer the money to RRSP before closing the account?
Thanks

This video is not accurate, Henry Kissinger went to the Saudis and they had an agreement that birth the petrodollar standard where they accepted only US FRN for oil. This was not in the 1940's as the video states, it was done in the 1970's when Nixon took America off the gold standard and closed the gold window because France was pulling out their gold from America. America hasn't been transparent about how much gold is actually left with no audit in many decades.

one thing I noticed about this video is they mentioned other currencies have been the world reserve currency, but every time there has been a switch, it was due to being taken over or conquered. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Again, very interesting video.
At first I thought - why shouldn’t countries trade in their own dollar and good for them.. However, quickly realized internationally the currency conflict may be a nightmare with converting and knowing which countries would be will to accept foreign currencies. For example, vacation in China and trying to bring yen home to spend to buy groceries in North America … (but I guess BRICS are ok with it)

Maybe creating a world currency would be more beneficial, but what do I know…

Experts and the general public are actually divided on this matter, the fall or rise of the market is affected by a lot of factors. so, predicting it would not be necessary, what I will advise investors is to look for safer ways to invest in Stocks

If subscribers of US dollar go low say 30% then we can say it is no more a world reserve currency and it may become a local currency subject to world's valuation.

The BRICS countries (an association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) at the upcoming summit will discuss the introduction of a single currency within the association, said South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor. The decline of the dollar has begun, Putin creates a new world))))

Actually problem is US printing dollar, at record levels, and saudi oil decline which they are hiding, are the basic reason for US collapse other reasons are secondary
