The problem with running VSTs on a proprietary groove box is two fold: one, they’d need to be optimized to the platform, in the MPCs case, that’s Linux. Two, the various licensing schemes used become a problem. Akai would have to essentially start running their own App Store and convince their direct competitors to sell on it. Where is the incentive for them?

If you want a portable groove box with all the power and flexibility of a daw, it already exists: it’s a laptop or tablet running the DAW of your choice.

You would need a wrapper or a bridge to run VST formats on the standalone devices because they are running Linux kernals. That would chew up ram and cause latency. Thats why they are making instruments and fx specifically for the devices. Would be interesting to see if any company looks to build for them now.

Open Labs was way ahead of their time. A controller with a full PC inside, who'd of thought. And here we are in 2023 pretty much asking for just that.

I love my Live II for jamming on the go with the speakers and just for the Xtra buttons it beats the og live but if your not moving out around the one is probably the better layout.

Live II Retro FTW - it will hold itself as a classic for years to come

The main thing you're missing is the software comes and goes. I started music in 2005 and have seen many plugins stop working. Especially on Mac, where every update causes everything to break. Especially with the release of Snow Leopard, Lion, and Catalina. None of the plugins I had back then work anymore. So you say "invest" in plugins, I just say renting

Don’t forget, it comes with Wi-Fi and Ableton control, a feature, that was previously reserved for the “upper” models!

Sorry vst3 is not happening in standalone..It would not make business sense for Akai and they would need to up the price quite a lot for the MPC.

I hope the advent of these Linux boxes makes developers focus on Linux audio production, like the steam deck did for Linux gaming. I much prefer using ubuntu studio to windows, but I can't use ableton or fl, just reaper and a bunch of dope free plugins and a few paid for the developers who have Linux versions

Thanks for the video, Had a 2000XL back in the day and got a MPC Studio 6 years ago. Looking to get the One+ or Live 2 in the future.

You can't fully control something like Serum with just the screen on the device anyway.

The difference between the live 1 and live 2 is the live 1 feels soooo much more portable because the lack of speaker. I toss it in a backpack like nothing. The size and weight difference really counts. The only thing I want are the buttons! I'm praying the live 3 loses that damn speaker and just has the buttons. The live 1 feels like only a small jump in size to carrying around my 404! And of course I say this from experience. Downgrading to the live 1 (and saving that extra $$$ in the process) was definitely the right decision.

I got the MPC One Plus 7 months ago and chose Jura as the free plug-in. They work great together

When you buy a standalone vst fir the MPC youre not locked into using that VST only in their environment, you also get access to the desktop VST as well.

Im stuck. I'm mainly a daw producer and that will never change however i've been looking to get a mpc on the side. I prefer the overall look, price, layout and dedicated buttons on the one but that battery, speaker and overall portability on the live is such a huge factor to me too. I genuinely can't decide which one i'll pick up. What would u recommend?

I 100% agree about the importance of user control and ownership of plugins. The day Akai started to charge for plugins was the day I decided to sell my MPC. Granted, their plugins work as a VST too and that's great. But still, I don't want to pay extra for making that work in their ecosystem if I can choose a free VST that will work everywhere else.

That whole sound thing is totally relative. I put the MPC One next to an Sp404mk2, and the 404 sounded pretty horrible by comparison. Partly because it's so much harder to eq on the 404 but I tried a bunch of different projects, but it just didn't stand up. Pity, because they're both dope AF.

I have a Retro One and I love it so much but the Live2 is probably a better choice at this point due to portability, wifi, and extra outputs. Now that I’m a little more seasoned these are things I want in a new MPC. Waiting for the next generation though, maybe they’ll upgrade the converters after all this drama .

The new plug-ins are cross platform, windows Akai or mac

I bought the mpc1+ but I notice that the screen and the area where the power supply is connected heats up a little after 1 hour of use. Has this happened to anyone else? Is that normal? I would like to know if the same thing happens to the MPC Live 2 or is it different because it does not have the same position and the battery does not heat the machine.
