I pulled a fat-max battery apart today that I bought second hand. It was fried. All 5 cells had leaked electrolyte and there was corrosion throughout. You can get Porter Cable and Black & Decker batteries to work with a slight mod. I think Porter Cable are the best as they require less tweaking.

I have the same drill. I have the opposite problem my charger shows constant GREEN when both batteries are flat.
