Very helpful! I've worked with Matt before, the internet sure is a small world. Thanks Dave!

I watched the whole 45 minutes on Matt granger his channel and great discussion and talk. I also follow Matt on facebook and gave input to him there. In my opinion a good solution for him is a 6 core intel with 32gb mem and a decent gamer video card like 770 or 780 and 2 ssd and some hdd. Doesn't cost that much and he dont need 2 workstation graphics cards of the mac pro.

The FCPX vs. Premiere Pro discussion is one I've had with a number of people. It's really a personal choice. I tried FCPX and I absolutely could not stand it. The workflow to cut and add effects just was absolutely ridiculous to me. But then I've talked to people who absolutely love it and think that style of workflow is awesome. The editor you use is probably the ultimate example of it "just being a tool"

I made the switch from FCP7 to Premiere Pro a few months ago after trying FCPX multiple times as they updated it. You guys are right, it was very easy to switch! The only things I had to learn was the keyboard shortcuts, Premiere Pro's title creator, and Adobe Media Encoder. The GPU acceleration and 64bit was a nice upgrade from FCP7. Btw I'm on 15" 2011 MacBook Pro, very nice computer and it's still running with no problems today.

I don't know if you talked about his in the full video but one of the helpful features that adobe has included to make the switch from Final Cut is that there is a preset for the Final Cut Pro 7 keyboard shortcuts. I am not sure if the keyboard shortcuts are different in FCPX but it should make the transition all that much easier To make the change it depends on the OS and premiere version so the easiest way to find out how to change it is "Help > Keyboard"

You can also turn off automatic rendering in FCPX so it only renders when you tell it to. Then you won't be writing as much to the drive. There's also an option in the File menu to delete the project's render files. FCPX wants you handling all the file management within the program without using the Finder.

Premiere Pro does render in the background by using the Media Encoder. You can render to uncompressed, H.264, Blu-ray and DVD all at the same time.

Hey Dave and Matt, Great Show. I've used both Final Cut and Premiere Pro on a Mac and have been very happy with both. Apple did some silly things with Final Cut X and didn't upgrade the MacPro properly so a lot of people switched to Adobe Premiere Pro. Now with Adobe's subscription base I know a lot of people who are switching back. It's like you said Dave, all this stuff are just tools and as long as they work for you that's all that matters.

I truly enjoyed this chat .... I am not a high-tech guy when it comes to computers and software but as a film maker who started out in the late 1950s I do have a knowledge of how to get there, that is from a director's point of view. I too purchased an 27" i-Mac some years ago and, even though I'm retired from film production, I ordered the Mac with enough bells'n whistles to handle both still and video photography, graphic interface additions which upped the basic price considerably. However, I could only afford Final Cut Express software, fundamental and basic but I could do all the editing I needed to do for essentially feature length home movies, including working with music & sound editing. I recently decided to finally purchase a Final Cut pro version but soon realized that the current versions just wouldn't work on my i-Mac. "Out of date, it's an antique" the Mac guy told me and advised me (if I wasn't ready to buy everything new and current) to find the 'last of the earlier version available & supportable' from Final Cut that would work with my model MAC. I did and was ready to buy, but when I further investigated I discovered that the 'chipset: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT' in my i-Mac (purchased some years past) was not suitable to run FC. Why in goodness would Final Cut / MAC produce an upgradeable software product that is incapable of running on the very product (i-Mac) that Apple encouraged me to select in the first place? As you must know, it's impossible to replace the hardware in the i-Mac - it is what it is. Anyway, that's my tale! I still love my i-Mac, which cost me a bundle for all the high-end graphic interfaces etc that I purchased at the time. Ugly business this computer sales --- my only option is to buy a new MAC with a suitable 'chipset'. Expensive business, not really geared to the retired amateur in my case.... However, now headed to my 80's, still stuck with Final Cut Express.

Dave, please comment on whether consumer surplus benefits from a subscription based software, like Adobe CC, vs actually owning the software.  I mean when I run the numbers as an at best amateur aspiring to film-making I cannot fathom why I would ever want to subscribe to Adobe's CC.  Generally, in the long run selling software subscriptions dig into your pocketbook, converting consumer surplus into producer surplus...something not a lot of people realize.  This would be a good point to bring up in future comparisons between video editing suites.  Thanks Dave.

I use a iMac and a iMacbook Pro there great machines. The iMac and MacBook Pro there both fully spec-tout with the fastest processor in both machines and the largest Fusion HD and SSD and RAM. I had both machines custom built at the factory.

Drobo's are renowned to be too slow for video editing

use a USB3 or Thunderbolt drive for your source video/audio
and get another smaller drive for scratch drive, again USB3 or TB drive,
if you have enough ports then export to a fast drive (either USB3 or TB again)

Nice vid guys, I was glued to this! I'm years working with Adobe. I'm subscribed to Creative Cloud and use about 7 apps on a daily basis. The only reason I use FCPX is because I bought it (just before I subscribed to CC) I've been intending to switch over to Premier but for some reason FCPX is quite gratifying and I like using it. I keep going back to it. I miss the 'direct link' of the Adobe stuff though, and yeah Dave, you do have to render out of AE and bring into FCPX. However, that process is quite straight forward and with a decent machine the render only takes a few seconds (for my stuff). Matt mentions audio in FCPX, i.e. background sound removal etc. Forget about doing audio work in FCPX (only good for simple stuff imho) I'd suggest just using separate audio software. like you'd use AE for fx stuff, using dedicated audio is just as important. I use Logic and Audition. Anyway, thanks for sharing, I'm no expert either but learning is the fun bit right? ;)
