US expands military presence to the Philippines in efforts to counter China

With the hope of countering aggression from China, the U.S. is beefing up its military presence in Southeast Asia by adding four bases in the Philippines.

It completes the arc of U.S. alliances around China, as the Philippines borders two of the biggest potential flashpoints: Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Jackson Proskow explains how China is responding, and what former U.S. national security advisor H.R. McMaster is predicting will happen.

China has only to blame itself for the expansion of US military presence in the Philippines, they leave no choice for the Philippines by pushing very hard for the Philippines to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. They claim their ancestor's fished the whole of the West Philippines Sea that's why they owned the WPS. What an stupid thinking, do they know that their ancestor's also fished in Africa, in South America, why not claimed it too.

China missed the chance to lead Asia and boost economic growth throughout the continent. They took the lead in dominating and invading and occupying the territories of other Asian nations, instead of unifying the nations in the region for peace, stability, and prosperity. China has fought nearly all of the well-known Asian nations: Japan, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, etc.

This is no big news..in fact they have been in the Philippines since 1900's...with Chinas aggressive movements and land grabbing in the West Philippine Sea, then this will be a deterrence with their bullying.

Philippines just opened 4 military bases for the US and its allies. The Philippines also made a deal with Taiwan for evacuation measures if war does breakout with the mainland.

The US Goal is to secure 5 to 6 military bases in the Philippines but not necessarily a permanent one. In the past the US have 2 huge military bases that were closed in the early 1990s. I hope the Philippines can get a better deal this time unlike in the past we received WW2 warships, Vietnam war surplus Huey helicopters, F8 Crusaders, APCs, Korean War surplus F86 Sabre jet fighters. They will not even consider selling the Philippines surplus C-130s until the 1990s. They are party to Balikatan, an annual exercise that is the corner of the Philippine-US relations but never left any hardware military equipment for the Philippine military. The US is very generous to other allies but to the Philippines, but everything bulok (outdated, dinosaur) is what they give to the Philippines. No wonder the country is getting is newest jet planes from Korea, ships from Indonesia, attack helicopters from Turkey, howitzers from Israel. The US will not even give the Philippines some of its mothballed F16s, C130s, helicopters lying idle in an aircraft graveyard in Arizona. The Philippines in their eyes is an important ally that protect their pacific plank but they will never arm the country because Washington wants it to be a “tuta”, a puppy completely dependent on them. Afghanistan was more important to the US as to give them over $80 billion of military equipment. Let that sink in.

This is a good move by the Philippines! The Philippines have tried all diplomatic means to resolve this situation even when the Duterte went full pro china during his term the chinese still encroached on our territorial waters and treat our fisherfolks like dirt by driving them away from their traidtional fishing grounds! Barely a week after President Marcos talked to XI face to face during his state visit to China they did it again and drove away filipino fishermen from our own territory and I think this is what pushed current President Marcos to fully revive and enhance the security and defense relationship between the Philippines and the US! It will make China think twice if they see that the US has installed missile defense system in the country and parked even just a couple of dozen F16s or F35s in their EDCA sites in the Philippines and not to mention park one of their aircraft carrier battle group in one of their naval station for a longer period of time. China is now being encircled with us allies like Japan, South Korea and The Philippines which are all close to Taiwan with the northernmost island of the Philippines only 100 miles away from the southern tip of Taiwan.

China claims and occupies Filipino maritime borders delineated in 1901Treaty of Washington. US recognizes Filipino maritime border as they signed in 1901. The international legality of Chinese and Filipino claims were discussed at the Hague Tribunal. The US supports the Tribunal's finding that Chinese claims do not have basis in international law. It's a no brainer who the Filipinos should ally with.
