I was in Germany for 8 years (3 years military, then returned several years later for 5 years as a civilian DoD employee). I've been to nearly all of the posts/bases in Germany. Some of them are like little US towns (like Ramstein Air Base). We have so many US troops and DoD personnel in Germany, there's even an American prison there (used to be Mannheim Correctional Facility, but now I believe they moved it to Sembach). I don't know why, but that always amused me. lol

Reminder. All bases and troops USA has around the world are there at the request, invitation, permission of the host countries. US always need to ask the countries to use the bases. Host countries can remove all US bases and troops whenever they want with snap of a finger. US is a guest and an employee to these countries. Japan allowed US bases and troops to continue to stay even after getting back indefinitely and sovereignty in 1960

I heard somewhere that there have been many bases, both in the US & abroad, where the local town’s people BEGGED the military not to close the base, both because the base was one of, if not THE, largest employer in the town, & because the base made the local people feel safer. Is this information incorrect?

US had bases in Brazil only in WW2, after this period there aren't military bases in Brazil of other country. But this was an important fact, because US helped Brazilians to criate our Air Force, an special institution that fought in Italy during this war.
