Why Would a Loving God Send People to Hell?
To understand what Hell is, you first need to understand what God is: not a creature, but the Creator and Source of everything. Everything you enjoy in this life—love, friendship, or peace—is an indirect experience of the pure light and love from that Source. But in Heaven, you experience all of it directly, coming straight from God—blowing your mind for all eternity!
Hell, on the other hand, is the logical outcome of a world without God—no love, no light, no peace. Why would a loving God want to send you there? He doesn’t! He didn’t create you for that. People send themselves there!
As C.S. Lewis said, Hell is locked from the inside. If you could somehow open the gates of Hell, the people who are behind them would not choose to go to Heaven. They already are where they are most comfortable, far from the presence of God. It’s the natural consequence of turning away from a pure Love that would never force Himself on anyone.
Byzantine theology describes Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory as the fire of God’s love. In Hell, the fire of God’s love burns you, because you have rejected it. In Purgatory, you’ve been saved, but you need the fire to purify you before you enter the wedding banquet that is Heaven. In Heaven, you are totally at one with the fire of God’s love forever. And that’s His dream for you.
Remember, He wants us all in Heaven so badly that He died to make it happen. Do you believe it? Do you accept it? The choice is yours.
