Yesterday, we had the great honor of hosting the incomparable Anna Karina. While she was in the neighborhood, Anna made a stop in our film closet to reminisce about her groundbreaking work with Godard, acting for Agnès Varda in CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, her affection for Charlie Chaplin, and much more.

Rest In Peace, Anna Karina
(1940-2019)

I've never seen an actress that is so adorable both in her youth and in old age. She always had a naive and childlike quality about her, something that is not easy to find in the actresses of today.

Imagine being able to look at a Godard DVD cover and say : “yeah that’s me.”

seeing her talking like this after all those years brings tears to my eyes, especially when she talked about the short film she did with Godard for Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7, it was the most lovely part in the film, I will never forget that little white dress and those big beautiful eyes. She is truly the Queen of The New Wave.

I almost got to see her in person twice. She was booked for a Film Festival in 2015 or 2016 in Portugal, specifically a viewing of Pierrot le Fou, and it was cancelled. A couple of years later, in early 2019, she was supposed to come for another viewing of Pierrot le Fou but when everyone got there, we were shown a little hand-written note by Anna, saying she had been advised by her doctor not to travel. A couple of months later, in december, she passed. I was so devastated, especially since I almost got to be in her presence… But I’m still deeply appreciative that I get to watch her work and interviews and little gems like this. Forever a fan of Anna. RIP.

It's amazing, isn't it? Even to imagine that this elderly woman had a vibrant beautiful youth one day and me, now 25, is going to turn 80 one day and look back at my 20s with love in my eyes. I hope when I turn 80, I will look back on my 20s and 30s with love and a heart full of sweet memories like Anna does. Rest in peace, beautiful soul. ❤

Anna Karina is still a very beautiful woman with those sweet expressive eyes and charismatic personality. She should still be filming. Hey, Jean-Luc!!!! call her again, please.

I did a photoshoot with her in her Paris flat in 1967. Spoke three words of English back then, but absolutely lovely as a young woman could ever be. So sad she's gone. Her films will live on of course.
