Hot water freezes faster than cold water?

preview_player
Показать описание
Experiment showing that hot water freezes faster than cold water under certain circumstances. What the video does not show is that it was -25 c that day. No video trickery. Just a pot of room temperature water and a pot of boiling water thrown into the cold air. The hot water forms ice crystals immediately and mostly goes up in smoke with little hitting the ground as oppose to the cold water which just dumps in the snow. This phenomenon is not well understood by scientist yet.

Legends say that the battery wasn’t actually low, but The kid said that so his dad wouldn’t try it again for another 500 times ...

Hot water has lower viscosity (hence why pouring a cup of hot tea or coffee sounds distinctly different than pouring a cup of cold water). I'd imagine that might make the water break up into a mist easier, exposing it to more cold air. I'd be surprised if the effect was the same if you just stuck the pot outside (since hot water has to become the same temperature of cold water before it freezes). As others have said, the heat from the water may also be condensing water vapour around it, giving the effect that a freezing effect is happening when the reverse is happening too.

"Which one freezes faster? Hot water or cold water?"

Answer: the kid's hand

This phenomenon is quite easily explainable. Hot water has lower viscosity and dissipates into vapour much more readily, which flash freezes in the cold outside air. On the other hand, cold water doesn't make many droplets that are small enough to freeze that fast.

I immediately thought about that episode:
"Why are you boiling cold water?"
"Sorry chef, I thought cold water boils faster than hot water."
"What..?"
