Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. Professor Lieu THANK YOU! I teach about 80 middle schoolers across 4 grades, 4 hour-long zoom calls consecutively with 5 minute breaks... it’s a grind but I love my kiddos! This video reminded me to be strategic with my time and energy and honor me and my students’ boundaries. You make me feel very calm :’)

As a high school student in an art high school (in Spain you start to specialize at 16 in high school, so I only give languages, philosophy and artistic subjects) we draw with what we have at home for artistic drawing and for volume we have completely sifted to writings, doing writings or planning things on paper with views.
Also our video calls, when they happen, are 50 minutes with 15 people.

notes:
#1 don't do long critiques, group video calls 30-45min, recommends small groups of 4-6 students, likes 1:1 video calls
#2 don't write long emails, be brief
#3 respond to emails (except weekends)
#4 video calls are not for lectures, assign videos or lectures before giving the assignment
use Zoom chat for attendance and to ask questions., can require students to comment in chat 2x,

HI Clara, thanks for the online teaching tips - I teach Japanese painting and calligraphy at an art school, which is now closed due to the health crisis. My students are feeling the loss and I have been thinking about setting something up online I already have a website and was wondering if I could put the lessons under the learning tab that i already have. I also made a google group for them, but some of them are having trouble accessing it for some reason. I want to keep things as simple as possible.

You're mentioning not to do video call longer than 60 minutes. If you're teaching class that is 2 hours what do you do then? What do you do if you have more than 6 people?

I'm a teacher, and I start teaching classes online on Monday. Each lesson will be about 3 hours long (!). The school said we should teach for about 2 hours and be available in the group chat (but not on the webcam) for the remaining hour. What do you think about that?
