Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at the Ritz Theatre and Museum in Jacksonville Friday in response to controversial changes approved this week by the Florida Board of Education.

Tragedy and triumph go together- if we deny or whitewash our history, we are lost. Future generations are doomed. Remembering and being awoken to the horrors and the causes of those horrors of the past will get us thru together. We can triumph -- with honesty, education, and coming together to learn and support each other's grassroots fights. As a trauma therapist, I don't see this as political as much as for the central pillar of health... knowing the deep root cause of a problem is where the solution also lives. Gaslighting, lying, revising history, and forced education, like book bans, are tools of oppression and never progress. I work with many clients who are in the US because of fleeing dictatorships and hold severe individual trauma as well as collective. I am terrified for kids and implore all of us adults in the room to do anything we can to fight for them.

Growing up as a Black late bloomer baby boomer I fell for that beneficial view of slavery from exposure to Songs of the South, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Gone with the Wind, Warner Brothers cartoons and all the media brainwashing in the late 50s early 60s. I wasn't enlightened until one of the Sisters of Charity teachers at St. Joseph's School in Roxbury set me straight. She basically used the same talking points Vice-President Harris used in this speech. Those nuns also taught me why calling myself a Colored person after the "I'm Black and I'm Proud" movement in the 60s just wasn't right. I learned to forgive the NAACP for being a product of their times. Calling yourself Black in the 1900s was considered an insult.
