In today's video, Paul Drew and James Ivey take a quick gander at a Fender ESQUIRE to see if it could be the ultimate rock guitar.
Thisguitar has a couple of tricks up its sleeve, but it only has one pickup.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

In 1991, I sold my 1984 MIJ Esquire re-issue. I'm an idiot. I've regretted that ever since. Great video BTW! Best Regards and Best Wishes!

Phil X would be a great guest to discuss single and duel pickup instruments.
Get the showbiz phone book out lads! 😂

I bought a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Esquire a couple years ago and I love it. Super twangy sound. Maybe not as versatile as a Tele but the tone has more bite. And I love the chunky maple neck. Best of all it was only $400.

I love Les Paul Juniors - might have to get an Esquire one day!

Well....I used to have a Squire, which was the 69 white stratocaster Jimi played on woodstock. I made it into an relic and bought the custom shop 69' pre-wired pickguard and the guitar was at another level, maybe better that alot of Fender stats I have played in at the local store, I sprayed a clear coat nitro cellulose lacre on the neck and on the body, which gave it a hard but silky smooth feel. Also, I used a bass guitar pickup cap and screwed it on the bridge covering the bidge, I had never seen anyone do that, but the result was stunning. changed the knobs with telecaster chorme knobs and screwed an extra string leader thingy on the headstock. The guitar was sold in a few days. The guy was aesthetic when he played it... absolutley stunning

Nice Paul. I like it a lot. I like that color. I only like maple fretboards when they’re relic’d. Typically like rosewood. I love when you buy a new guitar. Enjoy it.

That is one comparison i'd love to see, the single pickup Esquire to a dual pickup Esquire.
But not made between two different guitars. Made with the SAME guitar, like record clips with specific settings of the Esquire with the single pickup, then add/solder to that SAME guitar a neck pickup, and 4way with a position that bypasses the tone for the bridge, and record with the same settings as the previous recording.
That's the only reliable and true way to conclude if having a physical pickup there makes any perceivable difference in tone and feel or not.
Oh, and just a Guitar --> Cable --> Clean Amp setup, no pedals or distortions.

Hell´..., even easier..., if you have the kit with the neck pickup to add you don't even need to solder it, just screw it in place, set a standard height, and test to see if the presence and magnetic pull of it makes a difference on tone on the red Esquire guitar or not...
99% of the comparison videos made are usually done with two different guitars of the same model. That completely flays the test from the start.

Love the guitar, where did you get it and how much? Cheers

Very interested in hearing the sound comparisons. That claim has been made for years but I don't think anyone has tested it. I have a Les Paul Jnr and there certainly is something special about it.

Babe Ruth was a pitcher... but he was also the MLB Home Run leader until Hank Aaron broke his record on April 8, 1974. :)

Lovely sparkle to the ears and eyes! For the comparison, will you only mount but not wire in the neck pup and keep the squire electronics? (Less soldering too this way.)

Great video guys! Paul, I’m assuming you are going to use the conversion kit you showed for the upgrade. Do you think the new wiring harness is going to impact the tone of the bridge pickup when you do the comparisson? Have a great one fellas!
