Some say that lavabending is the earthbender's fire, but I say it's more like waterbending. See how Ghazan changes the rock from its solid state to its liquid state? That's what waterbenders do! Plus the fact that lava flows and moves more like a liquid, because it is, making lavabending the earthbender's WATER.
Edit: another thing I thought of: if you recall Bolin states "it's like I'm giving him ammo!" Lavabenders can take the rock other earthbenders throw at them and redirect it in the form of lava. Yet another waterbending tactic!

Also for those arguing about the one who is better or advanced the most, I do agree Zaheer made the most progression from a non bender to a skill advanced air bender who could fly but Ghazan stopped police cars on the bridge by melting their tires, destroyed an entire air temple, created a moat of lava to help give shelter from the metal clan and rest of team avatar, and can turn a few pieces of rocks into a lava spinning blade to cut through wood and other objects like metal if attempted and the prison that held him when Zaheer gave him three pieces of rocks. Bolin is also perfecting lava bending but I would say in season 4 he is probably as good as Ghazan or still getting there but improving.
