1) What is a tritone? A tritone is 2 notes separated by 3 whole tones or 6 frets.
All Dominant 7 chords contain the very dissonant tritone. So C7, for example, has E and Bb, the 3rd and the b7, as it’s tritone. (The tritone sounds to me like a European police siren and it’s part of the opening riff of “Enter Sandman”.)
2) What’s cool about the interval of a tritone (same as #4 or as b5) is that it divides the octave perfectly in half, and that it is the same inverted or upside-down. In other words, E to Bb is a tritone, and so is Bb to E.
3) Because that interval remains the same when inverted, it’s the same tritone that’s contained in 2 Dominant 7 chords. In C7, E to Bb (3 to b7) is the tritone; in Gb7, Bb to E, (3 to b7) is the tritone. The same two notes function as the tritone in 2 Dominant 7 chords.
Because of this, one chord can take the place of, or substitute for, the other chord. So instead of playing say G7 to Cmaj7, as a V to I progression, you could replace that G7 with Db7 (its TRITONE SUB) and now instead of V to I, now you would play bII7 (flat 2/7) to I.
Instead of G7 to Cmaj7, you’d play Db7 to Cmaj7.
4) Examples: in E, instead of B7 to Emaj7, you would substitute F7 to Emaj7.
In A, rather than E7 to Amaj7, you would substitute Bb7 to Amaj7. In D, replace A7 with Eb7. All of these substitutions contain the same tritone in both chords but now the bassist is going to play bII7 to Imaj7 instead of V7 to Imaj7.
- That, my friends, is why they call it a TRITONE SUB. It just gives you another option for the harmony.

Excuse me while I grab a pencil so I can write this down and draw the chords. This will allow me to chew on it a little longer.
Thanks.

Another nice thing is doing a tritone as the resolution. So Db-G-C. I like that sound a lot.

When you played the C∆9 I noticed you left out the fifth. Is the fifth not required? So the mandatory notes would be the 1-3-maj7-9 and the 5th is preferred but not required? If you used your ring finger to bar the b and e strings at the third fret so the G or P5 is added in would tht still be a C∆9 chord?

So you pretty much just flat your 2 chord and turn it into a Dominant 7 right? So In the Key of G it's Am9 Ab7 and GM9 ... right?

how common is it in jazz that the I chord is a major 7th or 9th chord? is it more common than for it to be a simple 2 or 3 note chord?
