CLIP DESCRIPTION:
At the basement tavern, Major Hellstrom (August Diehl) plays a card game with Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) and Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) where you guess the real or fictional character. He is the character King Kong.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A group of hardened Nazi killers stalk their prey in Nazi-occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. As far as Lt. Aldo Raine (aka Aldo the Apache," Brad Pitt) -- is concerned, the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. Raine's mission is to strike fear into the heart of Adolf Hitler by brutally murdering as many goose-steppers as possible, or die trying. In order to accomplish that goal, Lt. Raine recruits a ruthless team of cold-blooded killers known as "The Basterds" which includes baseball-bat-wielding Bostonian Sgt. Donnie Donowitz (aka "The Bear Jew," Eli Roth) and steely psychopath Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger), among others. When the Basterds' secret rendezvous with turncoat German actress Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) goes awry, they learn that the Nazis will be staging the French premiere of "The Nation's Pride," a rousing propaganda film based on the exploits of German hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), at a modest theater owned by Jewish cinephile Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), posing as a Gentile after the brutal murder of her family by the ruthless Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). As the Basterds hatch an explosive plan to take out as many Nazis as possible at the premiere, they remain completely oblivious to the fact that Shoshanna, too, longs to bring the Third Reich to its knees, and that she's willing to sacrifice her beloved theater in the process.

If you watch this without context, you'll think that they are all good friends.

I felt so naive watching this scene and realising that King Kong was an allegory for slavery. It had never even crossed my mind.

one thing i love most about this movie is it used real german actors for german roles, make the conversation so smooth & less uncomfortable when american/british actors try to speak german. tarantino really dedicated to his movie

This scene is a lot smarter than your average throwaway "waiting for main characters to arrive" scene

This guy (August Diehl) stole the scene, one of the best acting performances Ive ever seen.

I love how almost disappointed he sounds when he says, “Oh then I must be King Kong”.

“Am I the story of black people in America?” That line was the equivalent of a record scratch in a theatre. You could hear half the people in the theatre spitting their drinks out when it was said. Tarantino is a master at dialogue.

This is one of the best scenes by Tarantino

What a lovely group of friends, I hope they enjoy the rest of the night and nothing bad happens.

This is a brilliant scene for two reasons:
1. We can see how intelligent the detective is and how much he enjoys the thrill of the chase. The tension builds as he gets closer and closer to figuring out the truth, so great job on the delivery and the chemistry with the other characters

2. Tarantino made a great connection between the atrocities committed at the hands of the 3rd Reich and the atrocities carried out by slavery, which he would later cover in Django.

Listening to a clever German speak is like eating a good strudel.

In this German game, you are not supposed to answer the tenth questions. Only the British guy did; He said no. Great detail Taratino!! (That was pure bullshit by me btw. Sorry for the confusion and possible offenses!)

The German guy playing Major Hellstrom is an absolutely outstanding actor, and I don't even speak German! I'd love to see him in more films.

That guy would make a great Joker. Very sinister grin.

This scene for-shadows that this man is a great detective and will figure out their secrets right away

I love this scene, and Hellstrom is a brilliant character, I wish he had more screen time. Tarantino is a genius.

Notice how the bar tender actually never reads his book and keeps a close eye on what is happening on the table.

Of course a German would know King Kong. It was Hitler's favorite film.
