When I saw the thumbnail I thought he was holding a bottle of wine and was like "yup, thats how I do it"

Thanks, Jeff. Your approach is much better done than just trying to write out the notes directly, like doing melodic dictation in theory class.

Amazing advice. I am struggling with Transcribing at the moment. It is incredibly tedious. But, it must be done.

So so so so helpful. Just transcribed the alto solo from Mingus's Moanin' (Blues and Roots)

cool tips Jeff, thanks! I also often play along and try to exactly match what Miles or whoever I'm listening to is doing, all the nuances. Later, at a gig say, I don't try to copy or play exactly anymore, but retain the "feeling" about how a masters plays.

It's great learning theory and stuff like this from the perspective of a jazz musician.

Jeff, you rock ... I mean JAZZ ! I play jazz guitar, and prefer watching and learning from piano and brass players, you guys are on some different shit ! Listened to Hendrix, Segovia, Montgomery, Pass and similar cats, since the 80's, this is refreshing ...

Jeff i dont know if your going to answer this but in transcribing how do you differentiate if its a scale, arpeggio or outside playing, your transcribing a record that was notorious for all of the above mentioned. So my question is how to you make sense of what you transcribed like "Oh this is in Pentatonic scale" or "Oh this is an arpeggio.." or like "Ah thats Dorian, Ionian..."

Its a silly question but something that would be vital to know cause then you get o see what the mindset was of the artist.

Logistical question: do you work through the entire solo before transposing, or transpose into all 12 keys phrase by phrase?

Watching Jeff look on intensively is amazing. XD

So I'm trying to transpose a solo with many runs of 16th notes in it. Do you think it would be bad technique to slow down the recording? Will that make me a worse transcriber since I'm making it easier?
