We have had our greyhound ( Floyd ) for almost three years
now .Giving a retired racer a forever home was one of the best things we have done, so rewarding.

Probably the best overview video of the breed that I've seen so far. My wife and I adopted a retired racer in 2020. It took her a few months to get acclimated and comfortable but when she did her goofy personality started to come out. She did struggle with some loose stools and digestive issues but our vet helped find us a prescription kibble that has taken care of that. And her thin skin has led to a couple minor wounds because she absolutely loves playing with my parents' and sister's dogs. She gets so excited when she knows that we're going to go see them. Greyhounds are so naturally sweet and loving and gentle and docile. I don't know if I'd ever another adopt another breed, especially with how many retired racers are still out there waiting to find a forever home.

We “accidentally” adopted a whippet 20 years ago. Turned out to be an Italian Greyhound. Absolutely a wonderful addition to our household. We adopted another IG for a companion for no. 1. They’ve both entered the Rainbow Bridge 5 years ago. Now we have 3 adopted IG’s. Best breed in the world.

They are 45 mile an hour couch potatoes, and the gentlest of dogs. I miss mine so much.

GAP all states in Australia now have a GAP greyhound adoption program, you can adopt or foster a hound and see if they could fit a lifestyle.

I adopted my first greyhound in 2019. She was 4 1/2 years old and I still have her today. She’s a wonderful family member.

I had a retired racer for 10 years, he had to have shoulder surgery (4 years old) due to an injury while in his racing days. At 12, he suffered 4 heart attacks, vet was astounded that he survived each of them. The vet even sent his old fashioned (30 years ago) EKG paper print outs to Yale (within area) for evaluation because of how he kept surviving each attack. Ultimately, it was his hip that made me reluctantly give him his wings, peacefully. He was my friend, that's why I did not just abandon him when age crept up on him.

Greyhounds are the funniest, most goofy, and loving dogs!!! I have only had Evie for 8 months, but I am in love with her. No other dog I have encountered is as happy and excited about everything!
Highly recommend for singles couples families with or without cats. I have 3, cats and a staffy I love as well.
But Evie is unique! ❤

This was very well done, especially for a channel that doesn't specialize in Greyhounds. I've been involved in greyhound rescue since 1991. Twenty-one greyhounds have been my pets over that time. There have easily been twice that many fosters. I still have two today.

Pannus is rarely mentioned and is definitely something to watch for. It is very treatable with drops. I was pretty surprised to hear that mentioned. Nice.

Probably, the risk of bloat is overstate in the literature. Of the 1000s of dogs placed by the two orgs I worked worked with over two decades, I heard about zero cases of this happening with dogs in their care or with dogs after they had been adopted. (Generally very good contact was kept between adoptees and the orgs) It was something we were always a little surprised by, given the reputation and the number of dogs they handled over all that time. YMMV.

A sad tendency toward osteosarcoma (bone cancer) is the only thing I would have included. This is common to most tall breeds of dogs.

In the US, most of the greyhounds you see on the street are adopted out of the racing industry. That training introduces a couple more concerns. Also, these dogs were socialized completely differently when young. The way they bond with people is a little different than if they are raised from puppies as a pet.

Layering coats works well for my whippet during cold French winters here. One polar fibre next to his skin, and a waterproof windbreaker on top. Bright yellow because I let him run free and I don't want hunters or poachers to mistake him for a hare. Even on muddy days, his paws and (very thin) hair take less than a minute to get squeaky clean so he sleeps under the sheets with me every night. He's so gentle and considerate, I love him more than words can tell.

You know what, I was very reserved about getting a greyhound because I always though you´d kinda need to live next to a coursing area or somewhere in the middle of nowhere to be able to exercise those, but the more I learn about this breed the more I realize it just might be a perfect match!

Many thanks for the video. We had a retired racer for nearly 9 years and he couldn't have been more of a joy - or more a goof! He was 34-35 kg and needed more like 5-6 cups of US Iams dry food per day.

My greyhound Spirit has made the best choice I have made! He is the most affectionate and intelligent Assistance Dog I have ever known. He has saved me; and I saved him from the what usually happens to ex-racing greyhounds. He understands when I am
Unwell and he needs to work, and he knows exactly when it’s “off the clock” time and be a dog. Even when he is off the clock; he is so in tune with my body that he knows when something is wrong. He is a 4 legged angel. They should honestly be used more often as Assistance Dogs!

Super great and important points, with nice background video and easy-to-read subtitles, thanks. I love my greyhound, who is a retired racer, of whom there are many worldwide still in need of fostering and adopting.
