Step-by-Step for using Blender and Krita:
Open blender, go to Video Editing tab

Drag and drop in your video file

Change timeline length (if needed) on bottom right (where it says 'End') you can just set it really high like 10000

left click to select video

move around video clip by pressing 'G' and moving your mouse

scroll through timeline by click and dragging mouse at top of timeline (where blue part and timestamps are)

or use arrow keys left/right to move one frame at a time

with video clip selected, press 'K' to cut it

drag end of cut clip to left to make it one frame long

In Scene tab at top right set Output directory to a new folder of your choice

optionally, you can set FPS to 10 to see final animation result better in editor
make sure output type is image

at the top left of blender click 'Render' and click 'Render Animation'

open Krita, create a new image with the same resolution as your video
drag and drop your images in, 'Insert as Many Layers'
recommend putting all of them into a group layer

Go to 'Image' tab at top left > Resize Canvas, make it square (and crop more if needed)
Again in Image tab go 'Scale Image To New Size' and scale it to whatever you want

make a new layer and start drawing!

Man I love the no bull**it tutorials. Seriously you need a medal for this. 🏆

I really found this useful. I needed to animate my character doing a triple flair kick and then transform into a spider. Once i filmed myself doing it the animation was so simple.

Ah, the good old Prince of Persia style.

you can also wear a shirt with different color sleeves and pants with different color legs so it's easier to track the motion of separate limbs. elbow and kneepads, mismatched socks and gloves... at a certain point it's basically mocap.

I love tutorials that gets straight to the point.
This is a cool technique!

Oh my god such a simple tutorial. A lot of people are great at what was considered hard back then today. To get the point across like this is fitting for today.

cool, but where is the 10 minutes of intro and 30 minute explanation of why you are making this tutorial and 45 minute derailing into hypothetical BS?

Very impressive how you consistently provide sufficient instruction & detail and are to the point.

Thanks for this! Interestingly enough, this is very similar to a technique the Prince of Persia creator did in the original game. His interview on the ArsTechnica YouTube channel is a good watch.

It'll look even better if you search up well choreographed fighting scenes from your favorite shows

In Blender (and many other 3D CG pieces of software) you can actually create a nice pixel art look within the editor itself (I saw a tutorial on this with the new Eevee renderer). If you combine this with motion tracking and a couple of other things it should be possible to do it in a more easier fashion instead of using an extra image editor. This would also allow you to transfer the poses of your own body to whatever model you want to animate (even if it's 3D you can still make it 2D by just placing the camera at a specific angle that makes it look flat).

Great video!

Cool! Reminds me of Prince of Persia 😃
Just one tought of mine: You don't need to put your keyframes at even intervals (every third frame).
Just find the frames that have a very strong silhoutte or help to improve the animation.

Not every frame has to have the same length in animation.

Love this! To anyone reading, if you want to go one tiny step further and stylise the animation:
Instead of selecting every 3rd frame of the video, you could tweak it and deliberately take the most "extreme" frames, or take less frames during the start of the punch to make it look faster and more powerful, etc.
