Religion really does poison everything. We don’t care about random back wood families praying to the sky, but we do care how they project that reality into everyone else, like they have a right to condemn anyone else based on fatuous beliefs. I say we grow up now.

Christopher Hitchens v Tony Blair. If you have some time, this debate is really worth a viewing in its entirety.

Catholic Irish here, the English/Scottish protestants were put into Ireland in the 17th century, when we were pushed off our lands, murdered for practising our Catholic faith, our priests murdered, our language outlawed, we couldn't travel about, we couldn't vote, then all our food shipped out to feed English armies, then the only thing we could grow on the crap lands they deemed allowed us suffered potato blight for 4 yrs, millions of us died, then when Irish rose up they killed us or enslaved men women children, to cut sugar cane coffee on their plantations. So that's where the divide came from in Northern Ireland, where the Irish Catholics suffered terrible discrimination, not allowed to work or vote.

How true. But MY RELIGION is the only true religion 😆

As far as I can tell the divide in NI comes from politics & land ownership rather than religion.

Tony should’ve been tried for war crimes anyway. At least we got to see him get hitch-slapped.

I bet it was more political than religious. If not for politics they would get along. We have Catholics and protestants in the US, but no fighting.

this is nonsesne the divide comes from land ownership, not religion. The British empire colonised northern Ireland by setting up plantations during the 1600s and after Ireland had regained its Indpendence in the 1900s, Northern Ireland was still part of the Uk and Irish people living there were discriminated againsts because of their nationality. Which led to the troubles. The root problem was land ownership. The british empire invaded Ireland, its as simple as that.

it is not a religious divide in northern Ireland, it is a resource and power divide, the catholics were being excluded from world and jobs and opportunities and it led to a civil rights movement and a desire to overthrow British rule, they weren't fighting about or over their respective religions or their understanding of theology...

I love Christopher Hitchens. The world lost a global treasure. His word ring true long after his passing. Mm

Nationalism has always been the problem.
The issue is two groups of people each thinking they are in the right to live in that place or to decide how their other countrymen should live.
THERE IS NOTHING WHATSOEVER IN THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION WHICH ENDORSES THE VIOLENCE BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL IRISH AND THE SCOTTISH SETTLERS. It was always about land and power. Not religion.

It was not religion. Religion was a pretext for a nationalist/ethnic conflict. The evil that results from the perversion of religion does not prove that religion is evil.

The NI issue us not about religion . It is about sovereignty.
It just brakes down to religious divides as those people want a particular view on sovereignty. But its not because of their religon or religious views .
