Playing The Battle of Shiloh (6 April - 7 April 1862) on Ultimate General The Civil War.

Welcome to a new series where we will be playing battles from history on various computer strategy / war games.
Each release will be on the day the actual battle took place and we start the series with The Battle of Shiloh (also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing) on 6 - 7 April 1862. Up to that point the single bloodiest day in American history.
Confederate forces under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnston and PGT Beauregard clashed with Major General U S Grant and Don Carlos Buell's Union forces near the Tennessee / Mississippi border.
In today's playthrough, we use the game Ultimate General The Civil War to replay this battle. The outcome might surprise you - the casualty numbers certainly should!

Nicely done! I played quite a bit of UGCW when it came out; that's been a while though, no doubt I'd be quite rusty now.

Sidney Johnston, yeah, one of the countless ACW "what-ifs". The idea that he would've been up in the A+ tier alongside the likes of Lee, Grant, etc, can never be "refuted" per se, as we just can't know. But I rather think the notion somewhat dubious. I also, however, don't think that's quite the way to consider the question. Whether or not A.S. Johnston would've been another Lee (or even better) is somewhat beside that point; the CSA already had Lee in the east. The more relevant question: Would A.S. Johnston have been more effective than Bragg in the west? Again...we can never know for sure. But strikes me as a much more realistic and likely proposition.
