Battle of Shiloh Part 6, The Last Line | Animated Battle Map

April 6, 1862 had been the site of the bloodiest battle in American History up until that point, as the Confederate Army of Albert Sidney Johnston, now under P.G.T. Beauregard, pushed back the Union Army to Pittsburg Landing. However, Ulysses S. Grant had been working feverishly to set up a defensive line to keep the South from taking the landing and defeating his beleaguered troops. In this video, I examine the last fighting done on the first day at the Battle of Shiloh, examine the Lew Wallace controversy, and explain what preparations Grant took to win the next day.

Considering Grant's aversion to blood it must have required an enormous amount of self-discipline & determination to keep going after being splattered with blood & brain matter. After experiencing such horror it is a miracle any of them survived with even a modicum of their sanity.

Grant was under rated as a commander. He was cool under fire and clear headed .

My fifth grade granddaddy fought in the peach orchard and The hornet's nest with the first Arkansas. I wished I could have known that man he was born the same day my daddy was 101 years earlier.

This is an awesome series. A lot of you are probably aware that Lew Wallace wrote the novel, Ben-Hur.

You should look into the Battle of Mansfield LA. Some call it the Picketts Charge of the South. It’s an interesting battle and the Red River campaign was an interesting campaign as a whole. Some of the regiments that were at Shiloh fought there.

You’re doing a great job with these videos. Take your time on your next one but I’m looking forward to it.

One has to wonder what would have happened if Albert Sidney Johnston had lived. Would it have turned defeat into victory? Bragg was no Johnston.

Excellent video--I'm enjoying your whole series on this battle. One question--who is the fiddler playing "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" ??

Some book had it that if Lew Wallace had kept marching he would have been behind the Confederate lines, also when Lew Wallace turned around and countermarched, the brigade leading marched through the other brigades to take the lead, instead of just having the tail end brigade take the lead

The dogged pertenacity of Grant showed through even in the worst of times and no matter how the fog of war clouded the moment.

Very interesting. I wondered what would have happened if that cannon ball had killed Grant instead

I'm confused. Did this series not cover the second day of the battle?
