There is a way to model the surprise attack. You could have the level start with the attack already taking place and the units in predetermined positions.

Iron brigade would have gotten 100% cover had you pulled them back a few paces into the woods. Now they just stood there half exposed.

Regarding the design of the battle, I feel that it would be more realistic if the Union troop movement was frozen, that they not be permitted to move until contact with the enemy. My opinion.

I think I had 20 brigades, but I tend to preserve my troops better then you, If I lose more than 20% of my total force I'll replay the battle to minimize my losses.
