Motor Drives (Full Lecture)

In this lesson we'll examine motor drives, power electronics devices that vary the speed and torque of a motor under its direction by varying the supplied voltage magnitude and frequency. We'll review those properties that influence synchronous speed, examine antiquated methods of speed control, discuss rectification, inversion, and filtration, examine common motor drive specifications and parameter programming, and, finally, examine a block diagram of a generic motor drive including primary inputs and outputs, manual operators, and fixed and multipurpose analog and digital inputs and outputs. Thank you so much for making this video as well as taking the time to explain about the basic interface with all the different available connections that wires could go to.

I did a industrial machine removal of a large CNC panel saw (8000lbs) and got to keep the machine. Inside the electrical box were x2 Omron Sysdrive VFD that I salvaged hoping to use them for 5HP inverter motor but even after downloading the manual I only understood where the basic 1ph input / 3ph output and where to add a DC choke for adding noise filtering of the DC Bus 😅. Everything else was written as if the reader had taken a class on Omron’s VFD.

Looking forward to watching any other further in depth videos you make!

Great Video had my attention from start to finish. Look forward to more videos hopefully on VFD designing a simple 1 phase 220v 60 Hz to Three Phase 220 volt 60 hz converter with jelly beans parts. Common Mosfets and Op amps etc etc FYI You are the Alan from w2aew channel on analog circuits, Dave from eevblog on test equipotent and electronics. Roger from KainkaLabs on opensource and modifying stuff projects and circuits, etc etc Hope you do well on your channel. Best regards

Jim, I have always wondered about the number of poles in a particular motor of mine. It is circa 1940, used for an ancient elevator. Name plate data shows 1) CYC - 60. 2) RPM - 750. With that info the only possibility is the synchronous speed for a 50Hz/8-pole motor. But given nameplate says 60 CYC and all other induction motors I've seen gives RPM with slip factored in I'm at a loss. If you have some time I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Mr. Jim will you be doing a PID video?

Thanks! What measurement or meter can be used to check the output of a drive to a motor? If the drive has no bypass and the motor isn’t running on a call, would you check the frequency output?

Hi Jim Pytel
My name is Suradej, live in Bangkok Thailand.

Can you teach me how to select motor to match electric car or electric motorcycle?

"Untrained operators operating under the false assumption that they are trained operators".
Isn't this most operators? I think I've noticed that this is most operators.
