Motor Controllers vs Motor Drivers

If you’ve ever built a robot with wheels, or any motorised parts really, you’ll have come across the issue of needing to drive it from your microcontroller. Because a standard chip is only able to output a small amount of current, you’re not able to reliably drive small motors directly, let alone bigger ones. So, you need a way to drive them, which is where a motor driver comes in.

If the motor has a max voltage of 6V and the controller is capable of 5-30V how do I limit the output to maximum 6V out of the controller? This is all pretty new stuff to me.

question: 3 phase brushless motor off a 40V ryobi lawnmower, can i bypass the controller using any of these thingamajigs? DIY'er in my 60's not afraid of making mistakes, certified photovoltaic/solar thermal technician but this is out of my league
