In this video, I'll answer one of the viewer questions: What does relevant experience to get a job in UX really mean? And why background roles, skills don't easily transfer to user experience: research and product design. Or does it? I'll explain this and many other aspects using a simple 3 category framework that anyone can use in order to extract relevant experience and optimise their portfolio evidence, resumes and other tools when applying for the next role.

I've done free and paid UX courses on Udacity and coursera but your videos continue to drop knowledge bombs that no one else is teaching. The combination of your experience up until now makes your perspective very refreshing and up to date. Thank you for giving us a view into the current UX environment and tips on how to bridge the gap of what we know and what we are trying to learn and do.

It seems that you are reading my mind since last several videos did answer the questions at the same exact time they were formulated in my head 😂 I am very greatful since fully switching to UX with as it seemed having almost 0 experience tranformed to 10 years of experience in user research, usability testing, training and mentoring. I fully revised every project I did from UX perspective since my job titles were generic ones like PM etc. and now I more excited than ever to dive into real UX 😇

Thank you for this video it was a tremendous help and encouragement for me on many different levels!

I’m a Yoga Therapist and MBSR/Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Coach and Spiritual Transformational Wellness Coach.

I’m currently studying UX Design and as someone working in the Mental Health and Wellness field I constantly question whether my past skills and experience are transferable or even valued in the tech industry.

I’ve worked with the chronically ill, cancer patients, people suffering from anxiety and depression and people who are experiencing the last days of their life.

The two industries seem like polar opposite’s.

I look at some of these job descriptions for UX Designers and I immediately think why would any company hire me. I begin to question my past skills, my experience, my background and myself.

Since I have absolutely no experience in the tech industry. I start Self Gaslighting and begin questioning, doubting and devaluing everything I’ve done in my career even if know I’m helping to heal and comfort someone else’s pain.

Self Gaslighting is a very common form of self manipulation in which we invalidate everything we’ve done, our experiences our emotions and ourselves. In this instance Self Gaslighting eases the pain of experiencing rejection or invalidation from someone else.

When I read UX job ads, descriptions and the skills and experience required to be considered for a UX job I immediately dismiss
and disqualify myself.
This constant devaluing and dismissing of oneself, can to a certain extent
do a lot of damage to one’s sense of self worth, self confidence and self esteem.

When I’m working with clients what I often talk and teach about is Self Awareness. To cultivate a sense of self you must find self worth inside of yourself, that includes validating all your emotions, both positive and negative, establishing and knowing your own values, your standards, establishing boundaries and principles, and to live by them.
If you try and establish self worth outside of yourself or through someone else’s perspective or something else you will always find yourself trying to measure up. It’s like running toward a never ending finish line or gazing at a never ending horizon line.

Watching your video has helped me to become a little more self aware and to value and validate my past experiences and it’s helped me to stop and think, am I Self Gaslighting?

Thank you,

Stephen

Every time I find myself thinking that ux is too much and I'll not be able to make, I come across your videos and they remember me "dude, you can do it"

This was great and has put my past experience in a better framework. Moving into the three buckets of past, present and future really helps. And i love the bell curve!

Thank you for the vid! This is a bit early for my stage of ux career as I’m just learning but I saved it for later!

To know how to present yourself is different than being able to explain yourself. How to pick the right examples stories and connecting the dots depending on potential employer is and was difficult. Shoot my first 10 interviews on the outside went bad but it was about learning those ropes.

hi Vy.. you are one of the few UX designers/ teachers who I will really go to to learn. Im grateful that I found your channel and your book that I bought and still currently reading has really helped me get a better insight on UX and the steps I need to take to become successful. So a big thank you to you!

If you have the chance to read this and have time to reply :) Would you be able to answer this .. or maybe someone here can help .

I know UX design is really to help solve user problems...user issues that are align with the business goals and also help the business be better. But do you have any tips on what a UX designer can offer or do if they are wanting to work for technology hardware/software companies that sell their service/technology to other companies who then use the technology to put it in their products to sell to end user. How would you be able to go through a UX process with these type of companies?

thank you
