Diamond Sharpening Stone. Rob shows how you must prepare the 300 (coarse) side of a Trend Diamond Sharpening Stone before first use. Trend diamond sharpening stones are one of the best diamond stones on the market today, but if you do not do this quick, simple, break-in task on the 300 grit side before you use it to flatten a water-stone, it could lead to a heap of problems.

Appreciate you keeping this short and to the point, instead of padding it out into a 15 minute video like so many others do. Thanks.

I have the DMT diamond stones, x fine and xx fine and I have always hated sharping and I always used a jig after I first started woodworking. So I've been watching all your drawer making videos and I'm not sure just something g clicked and i thought i need to try to sharpen like that... seem easy. Well, i just tried it, and IM IN YOUR DEBIT! Thank u so much for this info! Ps it was when you sharpened a chisel in that series and that's when it clicked.

I use a cheap harbor freight screwdriver that has flat sides and do this under running water so that the loose diamonds can be rinsed off and not unnecessarily dull the plate

How often do you find that a brand new Trend Diamond Sharpening Stone is not flat? I purchased one that feels bumpy or wavy and has worn unevenly after sharpening the back of two chisels.

The wetsone will have a lot of water on it as you flatten. How do you prevent your diamond stone from rusting.

Great tip Rob. But what do you do if you do not do this? Is there a test for checking for diamond chips in the honing stone?

Yeah, absolutely you need to break in the diamond stone to remove loose diamonds, before using it on flattening stones or sharpening knives.

Was that just a diamond sharpening stone or a diamond lapping plate? I see diamond lapping plates usually over $200 where diamond sharpening stones $50-$100 depending on the maker

Does the ceramic stone wear out the 300 grit? I’ve been looking into diamond plates to flatten my stones as well as roughing in angles in new or worn blades and wondered if I needed a dedicated plate for each. That 1000/300 seems like the ticket if you don’t feel a dedicated 300 is required. This helped! Thanks for sharing!!!

Bob how do you clean the diamond stone after using it? I used water and soap and it got a little bit rusty in a matter of minutes

Question - Trend recommends use of their petroelum-based lapping fluid and says not to use water or soapy water as the metal can get down into the nickel diamond base. I don't like petro as its nasty and have always used a water-Dawn spray mixture similar to what you're using. Your thoughts Rob? Thanks!

Are you applying pressure when hitting that ceramic with the lapping plate?

Hi, Rob. Are you still recommending This Trend stone as a flattening stone for waterstones.
