While the band’s studio was being renovated, they moved to a mansion in LA, where the band leader Murdoc decided that he would start a cult. The band went along with it because they thought it would help album sales.

This video is at the end of that storyline. Their upcoming album, The Last Cult, will supposedly tell the story of how they got from here to there.

Late to the party, but an interesting interpretation is that "Cracker Island" is where all the insane social media ideas/conspiracies arise. Thus, Thundercat's "What world is this?" refrain is the logical response to nonsense. Also, such ideas often tend to form a cult of believers in said nonsense. Furthermore, the reveal of the "ghost" quickly fades from a beautiful young woman (the ideal) to an older, haggard one (the truth) which the cult leader played by Murduoc quickly embraces. May be way off base but it's an interesting angle on the song.

You gotta listen to Dragonball Durag! Thundercat kicks ass, he also used to play bass for Suicidal Tendencies. He's an excellent bassist, and I think he got a Grammy recently or at least a nomination, I forget.

Thundercat is one of the greatest bass players of all time. He's also an incredible songwriter and producer. You owe it to yourself to check out some of his solo stuff. I recommend 'Them Changes' 'Oh Sheit It's X' 'Funny Thing' and Dragonball Durag'.

Thundercat is with exploring on his own. A total weirdo but incredibly talented.
Them Changes is a good place to start. If you have to do a live performance to avoid DMCA, there's a good one from one of the late night shows, or one he did for Adult Swim with Ariana Grande and JD Beck + Domi.

I feel it could be taken as a shot at society being so strongly opinionated about their beliefs and religion and the lines “they taught themselves to be occult.” Saying we did it to ourselves, but I don’t think it should be only taken as religion because people when reading things online can also almost have an occult idealism with their beliefs ignoring evidence and listening to only one source saying all other sources lie. Very cool song made me think.

LOL! Dude you need to research the Gorillaz Lore. All those 3d characters have stories and backgrounds. The band functions in "Phases". I believe this is Phase 6. Usually every Phase has a villain and an overarching story told through the songs and music videos. Its awesome!
