I swear if the sails didn't look like used toilet paper I would use them so much more.

I do remember my one of my first craft was a sail powered cargo airship, and I loved everything except the sails.

Sails don't really work like air blowing on the back to PUSH them unless you truly do have wind blowing that direction, so instead the best are more like a pressure difference from one side to the other, that's why it works the other way, more like a wing. This way you don't have to have wind blowing directly behind to PUSH but instead the "wing" "sail" gets PULLED "sucked" a direction. It's kind of weird when you think about it.

Square sails IRL don't allow for as high a speed because triangular sails work almost like a planes wing allowing them to go their fastest 90 degrees from the wind and that actually allows it to go faster than the wind. Square sails can only go downwind and can go a maximum speed of the wind. I have no idea if this is how it's modeled in FTD but that is how I believe it is IRL

So I'm about half way through the video, following along with my own vessel. And you see, I hear BorderWise say 'maybe add wings'. So I pause the video and begin adding things like Rudders, and then some Wings and Alerions. Well, now my sailboat is flying, and the fact it flies somewhat better than most planes I make is concerning.

I have achieved a stable flight now. It's currently gaining altitude, at 240m, with a speed of around 25m/s. Send help.

Memes aside, I love this. And that explains why my square sails suck so bad and why my other sailcraft prefer to fly.

the thing with sails is that, like a prop or rocket, they actually only produce thrust in their primary 'forward' direction, throttled by the wind angle. That's why his 'square' sails didn't work well, they're two sails pushing into each other. you can make some funky aircraft using sails as wings because of this property.

Square sails and normal sails should be put on blocks so they can turn to the most effective wind angle. Share sails work differently than the triangle sails as well, as they are for downwind sailing

Sails would get a lot more use if they had the pirate skull and bone cross design on them instead of.... wood with wet water drops sprinkled all over it?

Why sails? Because they are cheap? What about the coolness factor? How do you do a pirateship and 'NOT' use sails??

Sails work in space and they work very very well
