Hot take: there is no such thing as a perfect depth for a snare drum.

I have had plenty of conversations with drummers about snare drums, and depth tends to come up a lot.

More specifically, the depth that they think is just the perfect depth.

This perspective derives from the experience of using snare drums over time and thinking that depth made the difference.

I have personally concluded that this is just a personal preference.

Depth does not play as big of a role as you think it does.

Read that again! Now, let’s talk about it.

The only thing that depth does is create distance from the sound traveling from the point of content to the snare side and back up.

This factor could cause the sustain to feel a little more open and airy instead of short and direct.

However, the material of the shell, drum head choice, a strand of snare wires, hardware type, hoop choice, and much more can also affect this factor.

You need to take a snare drum as one and stop pointing out individual factors that don't make as big of a difference as we think.

What do you guys think? Is there such a thing as a perfect depth for a snare drum? If so, what is it, and why is it? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it!

Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week. Love you, guys!! Okay. Byeeeee. 🥁🤓👊🏻❤️🙏🏻

If my snare drum doesn’t sound like a dodgeball hitting a brick wall then don’t want it

6” anything less or more is not good for feel or sound to me.
