Thank you for watching this tutorial on HDDscan for Windows - a free solution for testing your hard drive. For conventional drives, we recommend testing both internal or external drives regularly to catch failure before it happens.

Even if you have a solid state drive, we recommend having a backup solution in place. If a solid state drive fails, it often gives no warning and becomes completely unreadable.

If you need help getting a backup solution in place, reach out to us at 360-299-2428 and we would be happy to walk you through the process!

You were so close! That is actually the right program, but you need more info.
The Smart data is updated in realtime, but if you don't access the entire drive, it won't detect bad or weak sectors.
The program has options for surface scanning, so you can run a Read scan which detects weak or bad sectors.
The read also makes the hard drive to find if any sector signal got weaker, which causes it to try to fix it later. This way you get updated info about the drive.
It also reports slower sectors. If many areas get slow sectors, it is a sign of being close to failing. Thus backup your data now. This way you avoid data loss.
In this case, after backup, you can either copy data to another drive, format the drive and copy it back, or use DiskRefresh tool to rewrite each sector, to get new signal on the surface.
