Having a few reallocated sectors (ideally less than 30) is much better than having any pending sectors. If the sectors are reallocated, the drive already knows not to write to them and replaces them with new ones from the spare area. Hard drives usually have a few hundred spare sectors which are determined by the data the iPod doesn't show, so with the nature of the iPod and the fragility of these drives it's better to have less than 30 of them.

If the sectors are pending, the drive failed to write to them for some reason (power loss, error correcting, unplugging the cable, anything else), but doesn't mark them as bad. In this case the drive still uses these sectors, and it will repeatedly try to write data to them to either flag them as good or bad. This can cause various bugs and glitches with the iPod, like failing sync, the artwork not appearing, songs skipping, or the entire library becoming corrupted and showing something like 0 songs.

You can still try to repair the pending sectors but there's usually a 50/50 chance that it'll work. Putting the iPod in disk mode and doing a full format of it will force the drive to write blank data to the sectors, either reallocating them or marking them as good. If after this the number of pending sectors decreases to 0 and (not necessarily) the number of reallocated sectors increases by the previous count of pending sectors, the drive might still be good for some time. However, if the number of pending sectors doesn't decrease, and/or the number of reallocated sectors goes up rapidly, the drive is toast.

Gee, it woiuld have been nice if you had shown a clear shot of the screen so we could see what you are talking about.

Have an old 20GB photo somehow chugging along at 52 reallocations and 10 pending. Let's see how much longer it lasts lmao

retracts: 121
realoocs: 1023
pending: 0
power on: 517
start/stop: 50701

It still works kinda but is starting to misbehave A LOT. Can no longer plug it in to sync music or restore because it'll just lock up the whole PC it's plugged into. It still boots up and plays music when it wants to. Other times it'll display either the connect to iTunes or sad iPod screen.

Some people are asking about what the numbers on the screen are. They are not that hard to see but in case you cannot see them, they are (I think haha):
Retracts: 12448641
Reallocks: 0
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 6986
Start/Stops: 2350
Temp: Current: 25c
Temp: Min 12c
Temp: Max 51c

My numbers are not great, pending sectors is zero, but the Reallocks is 173. Ouch. What does "Retracts" mean tho, as mine us much smaller that the above (only 253)?

Just bough a 7th gen 160GB Classic in amazing physical conditions. Smart Data says:

Retracts: 1
Reallocs: 0
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 14
Start/Stops: 413
Temp: Current 28C
Temp: Min 1C
Temp: Max 44C

I’m guessing everything is good?

Mine has taken 13 and a half hours (10am to 11:30pm) to sync 1200 songs and it only has one reallocated sector and it usually takes about half an hour (I upgraded the drive from 30gb to a 120gb) and it kept saying I had to repair it when I would connect it to iTunes

I have a flash drive ipod 5.5 gen. When I tried that test with the HD, I got a blank page. Should I be worried?

I got an iPod Mini 2nd gen and when I went to test the drive it died. I guess that's one way to know if it's bad.

Good news is I also got a 6th gen Classic from a friend of the family and it has 0 reallocated, 0 pending, and under 400 hours on the drive, so that one is good.

I have an ipod classic 7g with the first 3 options set to 0, but in the option of hours ON I get 39 and in the option start/stops I get 5231 ... is that possible ?
what does it mean ? it's in good condition ?, It should be noted that the ipod makes noises like "click" but every time you read something and it is not VERY often

Thinking of getting some upgrades off your site. I'm in the U.K. Do you ship worldwide? Do you know if there is any import tax?
