How the Gambinos Created History's Most Powerful Mafia Family

Talk about patronizing somebody, I mean the people would come in and they would fall all over themselves to kiss his reign, it would be like visiting the Pope.]

This is Carlo Gambino.

He might look like a jolly elderly man. But for half a century, he led the most powerful, dangerous, and blood-thirsty organized crime family in the United States.

This guy was calling the shots, and those shots ended in murder. How he himself avoided being murdered is an astonishing mystery to me.

The Gambinos did it all: racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, money laundering, prostitution, fraud, hijacking, and fencing. But somehow, they remained hidden from the public eye. Illegal business was thriving while the police were helpless.

And this lasted for whole generations, each mob boss passing the crown to another until a strange twist in the story led to the end of the Gambinos as we know them.

I don’t know man, I’d argue that Genovese is a bigger and more powerful family, and I say that based on the fact that there’s little to no documentation on them, they successfully invaded attention better than any mob family

The Gambino's, Lucchese and the Genovese. Were the most powerful mob family's in america in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, but it was Don Carlo Gambino who was leader of the Commision from 1959-76. Roy Demeo was not a full member in Don Carlo reign, he was a made member in Don Castellano reign. Carlo didn't approve of Roy, he work for Nino Gaggi as a top lone shark in the 1960's. Demeo did not get his first kill until 1973 when he was 31 years old. Roy was a made man in 1978, Don Carlo was gone by that time. The gemini crew were one of, if not the most fear contract hit-men in american mafia history.

There’s no evidence Carlo committed any murders by his own hand. There were two bosses before him with Mangano and Anastasia. He wasn’t Luckys right hand man either. If anything Lansky was. He wasn’t even subpoenaed for the Kefauver committee. But Anastasia was. Same with Costello, Adonis, Lansky, Accardo, Ricca all the guys with the real power.

Carlo actually named Dellacroce the Boss but Carlo had dementia and Paul wouldn't let anyone really speak to Carlo and when they was allowed Paul had used Carlo dementia to trick Carlo into thinking he named Paul the Boss but he really didn't he named Dellacroce the Boss but Carlo dementia was used against him and Paul by doing that move eventually sealed his own fate years later when Gotti had him killed

Old man Gambino was smart, he stayed low key. It's when Gotti took over he wanted the limelight. I mean come on.... He was featured on "TIME magazine" for god sakes and he loved it. To much publicity, too much Heat. 😂

Gambino didn’t run the family for half a century. He was boss for 19 years. 1957-1976

One thing I learned in the street and as well as in business legitimately, is that once the people under you truly believe they can do your job. You're in huge trouble. So you never ever tell someone to do something that you wouldn't do yourself or have done. That's how you get respect from the ppl below u

If you crave more of an origin story, want to know about the times before the 5 families OR if you love nonfiction and American crime history, I highly, highly recommend :

The Black Hand by Stephan Talty.

Once you're introduced to Det Joseph Petrosino, you'll never forget him - a brilliant and necessary figure buried under the the perpetual turbulence that was, is, organised crime.

All crime families murdered many people.. including each other. Carlo was one of the few to get away with it.

For the 87000th video, that is NOT a photo of Salvatore Marranzano. Pretty sure that the same photo that everyone uses is of a London/British monster potentially named Salvatore Messina.

There is a lot of misinformation in this.

First of all, the Genovese were arguably far more powerful than the Gambinos during Carlo's reign. And arguably still are.

1:46 Carlo was not involved in Maranzano's murder, nor was he Luciano's right hand man. That was Vito Genovese. And that doesn't even make sense, why would Gambino choose to go from an underboss or Consigliere, to a soldier under Mangano?

2:02 There is no single "New York Mafia" there are five families. Gambino became head of his own, not the entire commission. Which you seem to be aware of when mentioning the Lucheses a minute later. So I am not sure what is going on there.

17:11 Gravano didn't "crack." By that point they were by no means "best friends." Gotti was a very jealous man and had grown to resent Gravano's reputation and influence. By the time they were arrested, Gotti was spreading several lies and rumors about Gravano as a means to justify having him killed. And I can't remember exactly, but I believe that the plan was actually in the works at the time of their arrests.

Edit: I feel I should clarify my comment. I do not like mobster nor do I condone their actions. I am simply fascinated by them. Nothing more. I do not think they are cool, nor do I make any excuses for them. They just interest me.

Paul Castellano should have refused to take thr reigns of the Gambino family and instead let Dellacroce become boss with himself (Castellano) as underboss. That would have preserved harmony and avoided the infighting.
