Alot of us have read about these people and have come to our own conclusions. My opinion is to listen to the guys who were THERE. Everyone is not jealous of Carlo. They were there on the streets with him at the time and had their own opinions of him. Thanks James. This was very interesting.

Idk. In my opinion I think people disliking him speaks more about his effectiveness in that life than anything. Tommy Ryan died from "lead poisoning." Sonny spent most of his adult years in the can. Bonanno deposed. Albert gets the pew pew. So does Galante, but Gambino dies on top, in his own bed. Never having done a real prison time. Then his kids (sons at least) make a boat load of money, gets the family name put on a hospital or something and die closer to 100 than they do to pretty successful in my book. Especially for being in the streets.

What it seems to me is that Carlo Gambino lived longer than the others in the old guard and that's why he became the most powerful, in the late 60s and early 70s he was the only Italian boss at a time when Italian-Americans began to dominate, as there were no more Italian immigrants arriving, the New York mafia bosses of his era didn't respect him as much as the young Italian-Americans, Joe Bonanno was boss until 1963, Genovese was arrested and died in jail in the 1960s, Profaci died in 1960, Costello had been retired since 1957, Anastasia died in 1957, Lucchese died in 1967, Luciano died in 1962, Gagliano died in 1951, Mangano in 1951, and many others... we only have testimony of the Italian-Americans of the 80s decadent era of Gotti, Chin and Persico, and almost none of the Italians of the era when Carlo was young, and what little there is, it seems that he was not very respected, but as he was the boss in the era of the Valachi Papers and the book The Godfather and then the giant success of the 1972 film The Godfather, helped create a myth of the "boss of bosses" Don Carlo Gambino, 50 percent of his legacy appears to be Hollywood.

I think Carlos status as one of the greatest bosses was basically a figment of reporter’s imagination. You judge a boss by what his peers think of him. Bonanno, Galante, Profaci, Magliocco, Sonny, Tommy Ryan, even his boss Anastasia all hated him. Seems to me, he was a snake who somehow made it to boss. If James’s video about Gambino not being responsible for Anastasia’s death is true, then he squirmed his way into leadership with the help of Tommy Brown. He was certainly shrewd but I don’t think he was a tough guy and certainly not respected by his contemporaries.
