Don Carlo Gambino: The Fox & The Lion | Full Documentary
Carlo Gambino was here to hold court with people from the community with grievances or questions, as was common practice for a Don such as himself. Similar to a feudal scene from mediaeval Sicily. The don was Sipping on his customary black coffee with his subjects brought before him. He was humble and attentive to their needs. But, he was also here on this morning as it had become known that the filming of a scene for a new film called “The Godfather”. Carlo Gambino was not your average “mob boss”, this kindly looking old man was one of the most ruthless Godfather’s in mob history. Gambino embodied the essence of what Niccolò Machiavelli, the philosopher of power, described as the “ideal leader”. He possessed the cunning of a fox, navigating the treacherous world of organized crime with an unmatched ability to identify and avoid danger. Yet, when necessary, he could unleash the force of a lion, striking fear into the hearts of his enemies. A man who was loved by many, but feared by many more. And now, we will peel back the layers of myth and mystique surrounding Carlo Gambino, revealing the secrets of the man behind the power – a cunning strategist, a ruthless operator, and a paradox: a seemingly mild-mannered leader who presided over a brutal empire, one of the longest reigns in mob history. Don't let his kind face or small stature fool you. This man did not come up the easy way, and was willing to whatever it takes to reach the top. Betraying those he swore loyalty to and crushed those who he saw as a threat. THIS is the story of who many consider, as the real Vito Corleone, the godfather of the mafia.

BONUS 📖

In 1972, the Gambino crime family, one of the most powerful Mafia organizations in New York City, was rocked by the kidnapping and murder of Carlo Gambino's nephew, Emmanuel "Manny" Gambino. This brazen act was carried out by an Irish American mob crew led by James "Jimmy from Queens" McBratney. McBratney's crew had been operating for over a year, targeting Italian mobsters and demanding hefty ransoms for their release. However, their luck ran out when they snatched the wrong person – a close relative of the Gambino family boss.
Infuriated by the attack, Carlo Gambino demanded swift retribution. This presented an opportunity for a young John Gotti, a rising star in the Gambino family and a protégé of underboss Neil Dellacroce. Gotti, along with his loyal friend Angelo "Fat Angie" Ruggiero and another associate Ralph "Ralphie Wigs" Galione, took it upon themselves to eliminate McBratney.
In May 1973, they lured McBratney to a Staten Island tavern. What followed was a brutal execution. Despite their ruthlessness, their plan wasn't foolproof. Witnesses at the scene eventually identified Gotti and Ruggiero, leading to their arrests and convictions for the murder. Galione also faced legal consequences. While the act solidified Gotti's reputation as a fearless and ruthless gangster, it also landed him in prison, a consequence that would shape his future trajectory within the Gambino family.

Great video! Loved the interesting information, compelling narration style, scholarly nuances (e.g. Machiavellian references) and film footage! Btw—that photo of Gambino’s row house was in Brooklyn, not Massapequa; His shore home - where he unfortunately died while watching a Yankees game - was in Massapequa).

Love the animations of Don Carlo. Shows the closest to his famous quote about being both the Lion & the Fox. A very very clever man he was.

Notice how powerful the Italian mafia was from the 1920s up to 1976. That's the year DON CARLO passed. Notice how SLOWLY BUT SURELY from 1976 till now the power has WEAKEN. goes to show you the OLD TIMERS knew how to run the show BETTER. 😢

His ability to read and size people up must have been almost supernatural.

Gambino’s story has so much value, I understand patience. It is said when Gambino informed Luciano of his decision to remove Anastasia it was only then - that Luciano realized he was both the lion and the fox.
Is it possible to do Bio on Tony Accardo and or Paul Ricca? Thanks for your content and ✅ subscribed to the email.

The philosophies expressed in this presentation are completely relevant to an era long past, but perpetually relevant to cultures throughout recorded history. 'THE SKIM' from universal efforts to secure food, clothing, shelter, entertainment, etc. will always devolve to muscular managers. Facism was (is?) just one more iteration of that human-dynamic.

The only man I would ever say outdid Gambino would be Tony Accardo. Sadly, making a documentary on him wouldn't come easy.
