It took me a while to understand how this preloading mechanism actually works. Once I figured that out and how to put the gearbox back into place without losing the load, it was easy.
Thank you very much, without these instructions I wouldn't have even suspected that it was necessary to apply some preload and would've wondered why the dial wouldn't work anymore.

Great video that I stumbled upon rather accidentally, , , as I am actually trying to disassemble and clean a set of Fowler calipers for a good friend of mine...
I couldn’t help but notice, the o.w. marks on the case and the back of your mitutoyo set, and you said that you ordered them from the Internet.
Amazing how they got from central Arkansas too you !!! I am o.w. by the way, ,,

Beautiful; very useful, just did mine, it was a bit magnetized and had metal chips inside on the gears;

Nice unit. I have the imperial version of these. They also have a metric scale on the rule, but the dial and fine increments are SAE.

Thanks for the video! I have a set of No. 505-627-50 calipers. I am having extreme heartburn trying to remove the needle! I mean, I am REALLY prying up under the center section. I am using a pair of tweezers to straddle the stem. I placed a razor blade on top of the dial face to absorb the force. Your thoughts?

Mine are 505-633 callipers and in desperate need of a service. They became so bad that I stopped using them. Looking like today is the day to see what is inside.

Hi can anyone help me out i have lost the long shim during servicing the same caliper i just want to know the thickness of the shim i will machine it myself anyone's swift reply would be highly appreciated
