He makes either craziest most hard words for non-native english speaker BUT HIS LYRICISMS ARE MASTERPIECES

I love how he’s such a brilliant songwriter and then in interviews he can barely string a sentence together 😭

He's one of my favorite song writers. I've been doing some poetry/song writing as a bit of a therapeutic release and I've always loved his witticisms as kind of a way to skirt around getting too emotional. At least thats how I interpret a lot of his lyrics hah

One thing I also like that has been happening more and more in TBHC and car is this technique where throughout a verse, lines are written as if the previous line is the only one before it, and goes into a different direction. This weird technique is what makes car sound so much like it's in a trance or dream.
Probably my favorite example that comes to mind is the first 3 lines on Hello You, but there are plenty more cheeky lines in TBHC as well.

another example is "it's not over until the fat lady sings" which he turned into "if i watch, don't continue to swing, or the fat lady fancies having a sing" he is so smart

That was quite the compact poetic class to fit in a nutshell.

GAH I LOVE ALEX SO MUCH
One of my favourite lyrics from him is "Oh, there ain't no love, no Montagues or Capulets" from 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'.

It's just saying Romeo and Juliet (the poster children of romance) without saying Romeo and Juliet ✋🏻😭😭😭🤯🤯

For those who don't know, it's because Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague are their full names! :D

I’ve always said Alex Turner would’ve be the best writer of all time if he had the opportunity to have been born before Shakespeare

I always thought “your shoulders are frozen (cold as the night)” was literal as in she is cold because they are out dancing at night and she is probably wearing a party dress that exposes her shoulders (not uncommon for girls to go out clubbing without a jacket and be cold by the end of the night and ask a guy for his jacket)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Alex is one of your subscribers. I sucked at English in school, but you make me wish I had paid more attention! As a lyricist myself, I am always trying to tie in a 'known expression' in a way that is fresh. Not at all obvious to do; Turner is brilliant. And so are you for being able to recognize and subsequently point out to us all of this in such an easy-to-understand way!

I'm not a songwriter, but it was really insightful, thank you!! Actually, one of the main reasons I fell in love with the band is the lyrics - and after this analysis I feel like examining every single line Alex wrote. And it must be quite a boost to my English

This is such a satisfying video. I feel like I inherently knew most of this, but could never have articulated it as effectively and there's like a weird sensation of relief hearing you describe these techniques so accurately. Thanks for the great content, wish you well.

Wow. A lot of information here. I'm not a native English speaker, so I guess I have to look at your videos at 0.5 in order to understand all of them properly. Thanks again.

I've done stuff like this before! Cool to see the idea being dissected, so we can see how it works

Amazing video, he's a brilliant lyricist who deserves more recognition. He belongs in the top tier category of writers.

thanks you for this, love all of his songwriting and you summarized a ton of tricks he's has up his sleeve! also, I mean this as a compliment, but your accent reminds me of Michael Fassbender.

Cheers. Just the little bit of a push I need to finish a short queue of songs that are half written

It’s funny, I have some songs with nice tight lyrics that need the music finished. Other stuff where the music is essentially mapped out, but the lyrics are incomplete and / or suck

Need that 30-60 minutes of clear head space, with the inspiration flowing, but so much to do before Saturday. Such is life working for yourself on something that isn’t music, but pays much better, and most of the time you don’t mind doing it :-)
