Wired and Tired: Fixing Adrenal Burnout

You have likely heard the term “adrenal fatigue.” We commonly associate this term with the feelings of extreme fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, and other physical symptoms that can occur from chronic stress. More accurately, we can look to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis for the cause of these discomforts. If you have chronic stress, your adrenals get beat up, and your energy plummets and it becomes difficult to manage your life. You could feel tired and wired, all at the same time. All these are clues that you could have an imbalance of your HPA axis.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the signs of HPA axis dysfunction and how to support your HPA axis to reverse burnout. They also share patient cases that they have treated.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

This episode is sponsored by Starseed and Joovv.

During the pandemic I started "birding" / bird watching because I was bored. Thanks to that, I am now outside in my spare time, no matter what weather or season it is. It has helped me so much to handle the stress my job causes. Being outside in nature, moving my body and seeing the beauty of the world where is literally the best thing for me personnaly. I really don't wanna miss it.

It’s interesting that people refer to meditation, yoga and reiki and all sort of different ways of healing but they never talk about prayer which is above all those methods of relaxation and healing, when you’re meditating on God’s attributes and connect with Him and feel His love pouring out on you. The sweet, sweet presence of God!!!

As a mental health counselor I recognize the symptoms you are discussing are also symptoms people experience when they have complex trauma, especially when this trauma goes unresolved. This is because the body, physiologically, is in a constant state of fear and stress. It really fits with what you are talking about as well as Polyvagal Theory.

Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said .
“ Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”❤
I am recovering from adrenal fatigue and God used this to change my heart. He showed me how much of unnecessary things I put on myself. How important it is to be giving Him my burdens, spend time with Him and rest in Him. I am grateful for this journey because I got to know God better ❤

First cut out caffeine, nicotine and edrephine(stimulants) and then supplement with vitamin B5, vitamin c with all the bioflavionoids(not only ascorbic acid). Combine this with adoptgenic herbs, for example ashgawanda or licorice root. Best luck.
Sorry for my English.

Being a nurse, that's what we do. Take care of others. But also the medical system forces us to work when we are ill.

I feel like this is exactly what I have after a decade of very stressful events. Trying to find someone to treat it creates more stress.

Wish I heard this podcast 4-5 years ago. It took my doctors 4 years to diagnosed me with adrenal insufficiency and only happen after I went to see a functional medicine doctor.

PHENOMENAL. I cannot thank you all enough for this podcast. I am a licencsed massage therapist who also has Addisons. This helped me phenomenally. From a personal level as well as helped me remember my work is vital in wellbeing and Healthcare. This, by far, has been the best explanation of adrenal fatigue and the inner workings. THANK YOU.

I’m 58 and currently in therapy for ptsd and EMDR. I’ve had 7 sessions and can say it is incredibly helpful to process the trauma that was repressed from my childhood. One of the biggest challenges has been muscle pain in between my shoulders and that is back to normal. Now fatigue is my biggest issue. Thank you for this information.

It feels good to have someone acknowledge the multiple realities of our world today. Most act as if this is normal, therefore, we should simply ignore everything collapsing around us. Thank you for addressing peoples unspoken fears and needs. ❤❤

I have drinked coffee when i was 16. I'm now 32. I drank atleast 3-5 cups a day. I had so bad burnout that when i drank coffee i literally started to feel dizzy. When the burnout showed some really bad symptoms i had high blood pressure, high HR. I had really bad anxiety and my heart was palpating like crazy non stop. I just had to quit coffee cold turkey after all these years. I was on a long sick leave when i basically just slept and slept. I'm still recovering and i feel exhausted but i'm much better. I eat much healtier and try to REST as much possible and i try to keep my body calm. I've moved from weight lifting to yoga, pilates and walking. So after i stopped the coffee i wanted to test it after a long time. After just one cup i had SO bad anxiety and my HR went up drastically and i started to sweat. Even on the evening i felt like i couldn't sleep. I didn't believe how bad symptoms I got from JUST ONE CUP! Now I understand what kind of poison it really is for me and I learned that i've abused my body with it all these years. I still love the taste and smell of coffee but i moved to chicory from regular coffee.

There was some study showing that small amounts of melatonin can work almost as well as anxiety medication . I've been taking half of a gummy each night and it has been making me feel 10 years younger

As someone who had accumulated stress over time, EMDR therapy was very helpful to process developmental trauma. I think there isn’t enough emphasis on the physiological stresses that can be at least as impactful as the psychological traumas. For me, my breast implants created a allergic immune system response to the chemical adhesives. This put my body in a chronic state of emergency for years. I had them removed after trips to the ER showed no signs of any other reason for all the adrenal burnout symptoms with inability to take a deep breath…chest pressure. I had great relief over the last 6 months but slowly the adrenal burnout fatigue became more intense. It will take much longer than I thought to heal as I had no idea about adrenal burnout. I really do have a healthy peaceful lifestyle.

Many of us are stuck in the fight or flight loop with anxiety. LIfe has changed so much since the pandemic and we spend too much time scrolling on our phones. We isolate or work at home. We have burnout right now or chronic health problems. We just want to stay in bed.
