The U.S. Navy has recently taken delivery of its first modernized and distinctive Northrop Grumman E-6B aircraft, commonly referred to as the "Doomsday" plane.

This "Mercury" aircraft serves as a vital communication link between the nation's nuclear submarine fleet and the President.

The delivery of the aircraft is a critical part of a larger contract valued at $111 million awarded to Northrop Grumman. The objective of this contract is to ensure the long-term and sustainable operational efficiency of these aircraft.

After departing from the company's facility in Louisiana, the aircraft was transported to its new station at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.

In this video, Defense Updates analyses why delivery of upgraded E-6B aircraft by Northrop Grumman to the U.S. Navy is a major step?

Just the other day i heard a plane fly over my area on the Washington coast. I went to flight radar and the only plane over was from a navy plane with no call signs. But it was one of these planes. Same model. Its cool looking at it up close.

Imagine being in that plane and all of your family doesn't know what's going on. Nuclear War takes off, and you're powerless to protect them. You survive, and they are all dead. Imagine the feeling of being a pilot or crew member of that plane knowing what is happening

Would not be surprised if B-21s are
being configured to also maintain communications with the US sub fleet.

Nice reporting on this good looking bird. A Boeing 707 variant upgraded by Northrop, for the Navy, and stationed at Tinker AFB, OK.

all future E-6B Mercury could be based on the stretched B707-320 or B707-402 variants of the basic B707-120 . . . it'll be incorporated with all airframe upgrades found in the E-6B Mercury & E-3 Sentry, including upgraded turbofan engines . . .

When I was stationed there with VQ-3/SCW-1 they said they were going away but I guess the decided to modernize them.

Both the navy and the air force share this aircraft together although it's a flown by the navy the air force retired it's looking glass aircraft so both services operate in the same plane its serves the same purpose as the looking glass planes did the looking glass planes were old so the air force retired them now they both serve on the same aircraft

Seems a little strange that a Navy aircraft is stationed at a USAF base, but my AF boss's boss was Navy. We got along fine.

Is this the same platform as looking glass or crystal palace?

All you can do is be prepared. Most important, don't live in the city

When I saw E-6B, my mind immediately went to the EA-6B Prowler, also by Grumman (before the merger with Northrop).

Edit: of course, this appears to be a modified Boeing 707, like the KC-135 Stratotanker, but the engines appear to be newer.

During time of war, how likely would this aircraft survive if its not stealthy?

That's great, it would be nice if they could fix the delay's, building and maintenance issues when it comes to ships/subs in the Navy. Seems like things are only getting worse for the Navy not better at a time when we need more ships, subs, and readiness than ever.

don't you rant about all your aircrafts as doomsday aircraft?

...they had better have a padded elevator and a cane for biden to board, or we're all screwed.
