Why Are Colleges Getting So Expensive?

Students are paying more every year: But different schools have very different reasons for their unstoppably rising costs.

In Economics in Plain English, the new economic explainer video series from The Atlantic, business editor Derek Thompson answers big and small questions selected from hundreds of reader submissions.

People like to ask why "college" is getting so expensive, but they need a better question. There are almost 7,000 accredited colleges and universities in the U.S., from public community colleges, to public research universities, to Ivy League bastions. Even beginning to say, "here's what college costs" is like saying "here's what food tastes like." It's a big, useless generalization.

Different schools are getting expensive for different reasons. Since we only have three minutes in this video, we try to make it as easy as possible. The most important reason that public schools are raising tuition is that their states are cutting education spending. The most important reason that tony private schools are raising tuition, however, isn't state budgets shrinking, but rather the schools' budgets swelling, as they spend more on research and campus amenities to attract the world's best and brightest.

0:51 I don't think loans should be counted as part of that calculation. Yes, in the short term, you can pay for it, but you're going to have to live with that debt for a long time.

The best choice is to choose your public university of your state. I'm a resident of Arizona, I should have chose ASU. You get a pretty good discount deal on being an in state resident and college isn't really that expensive for 4 years.

Why is this only 3 minutes? This video doesn't do enough to explain the issue and makes broad generalization instead of taking a sample of state and private universities.
