So basically the corpses of the Earthmovers are still on the surface of earth because they all died of no sunlight. Their bodies and minds are recreated in the 3rd layer of violence with their legs rooted to the ground making them unable to move (Hakita in the dev stream confirmed the red stuff on their feet are tree roots.). Now in this trapped state they are forced to fight each other, but can't actually hurt each other because of their shield generators, so they're forced to fight an endless without reason. The existence of their brains makes me think these machines are actually sentient, meaning these machines aren't just put in this layer just because, but this is their punishment after they died. Although their willingness to keep fighting despite the futility of it doesn't make me think they're highly intelligent.

My personal theory is that machines are living beings (maybe except for the early models) and when the earthmover died, he was sent to the violence layer, more specificaly to the place made for the people who did violence to the nature, god and art

About the "machine being alive", why do they have flesh and some of them have eyeballs? And why the earthmover have guts and stomach acid on the inside? Hakita recently also said something about that so yeah, they are probably alive
