Turing looks great on paper...but what about those prices?

The fact that you got snubbed by nVidia is something you should wear like a badge of honour. It simply means you can't be bought, you know it; they know it; and we know it. Keep up the great work, objective reporting is just *what you do*

Great round up Jim, was great to see how the reviews compared. Nice number crunching!

It is so true.

Remember Fermi days and before when a full, unlocked, flagship card was $500? Now $1200 doesn't even get you the fully unlocked chip. What a joke.

Note that when Wolfenstein II appears twice in the "best results" chart at 6:14, that was deliberate. It was two different websites but with a similar very high score.

Mate just because you didn't get to benchmark the cards yourself doesn't take anything away from your work. You make great content and I'm always thrilled when I see your videos pop up in my feed.

*starts to order new GPU*
"WHO THE HELL IS BUYING THESE CARDS?"
*Immediately closes tab and throws wallet*

*Nvidia's Mesh Shader* is nothing but Nvidia equivalent to *AMD's Primitive Shader* . *Nvidia's Ray Tracing Audio* is nothing but a Nvidia's equivalent to *AMD's True Audio* .

Nvidia is going the compute route because they want to cater to the lucrative compute market, by the way this is the same compute market that being heavily subsidized with your tax-dollars- DARPA. Why do you think Intel is suddenly out of the blue coming out with a GPU. Surely not for gamers.

Nvidia is doomed because the more games become compute-based (Procedural Generation) instead of graphics-based, AMD will win. Hands down.

1:29 "I seen some nice looking charts in my but this isn't one of them". I literally laughed out loud.

Thanks for the review and the laugh.

The consumers brought this upon themselves by buying cards based on brands and not actual performance.
AMD must be laughing so hard now. When they actually competed, people always tried to downplay their cards even when they were actually better. Now the same people want AMD to compete just so that nVidia bring down their prices so that they could buy nVidia cards lol.
Well AMD doesn't have an infinite pool of money to throw on research when people only want them to compete without buying. So they've moved onto console market where it pays them better. As always great content Jim. Thanks a lot.

Well I have no regrets in picking up a 1080Ti second hand for £550 even still that is around what it should cost for a highend GPU new...

$1, 200 for a graphics card that will be obsolete the moment you buy it and supports technology it can barely run, at a resolution that's been around since 2005? Plus has no software for its' fancy features? Nah, as nice as the cooler is I think I'll put the $1, 200.00 toward something more useful. I haven't owned anything nVidia in years, they can raise the price every year to their hearts content.

Eventually, they'll be selling something in the 1050 Ti range for the same $1, 200.00 and the only ones they'll be hurting is themselves. It's like a stupid kid that doesn't listen, you just gotta stop wasting your time warning them about hurting themselves and just let them learn the hard way.

The reason Wolfenstein II (and DOOM 2016) run so much faster on 2080ti is because it can leverage async compute in Vulkan (simultaneous INT32 and FP32). My guess is we will see many more game engines adopt async compute since now both AMD and Nvidia are able to leverage it effectively, but that's just another reason why you should buy Turing later rather than sooner.

People will still buy them.
Nvidia will just keep raising prices until the market can no longer bear it.
I only hope AMD can make a comeback in 2020.

Excellent work Jim a solid round up and content as always, I almost prefer that you do an over-view like this rather then bench the card yourself... Unless your okay with doing both then in which case I'm all for it. lol

Great analysis as usual, and yep, despite what reddit was trying to tell me, the initial performance predictions of many of us were more or less bang on.

Personally I still believe Turing is a stopgap product though- not because RTX isn't here to stay, but because even the half baked current implementations of RTX seem to perform poorly and I think it won't be until the next generation of RTX cards or even after that that we see the raytracing tech put to good use without compromises. And until then there will be little reason to buy anyway based on the tiny amount games that support it for any meaningful reason.

On top of that, we know their next generation will likely be on a new node, so I find it really hard to see Turing as anything other than a stepping stone. It was interesting to hear what Hardware Unboxed said about Nvidia moving to Samsung 10nm while it seems AMD have priority for TSMC's 7nm- I wonder how that will play into the next generation of each companies cards.

I literally look forward, daily, to seeing a post from you. Especially now that the tech "plot" thickens. Its like stumbling, mid-fight, into the battle of Helm's Deep. Cheers!

I always look at roughly 10+ "Major" Tech Websites / YouTube channels before buying a new piece of hardware, and averaging as many benchmarks as possible.

A key aspect of this approach is throwing out any sort of outliers in the data -- ie if there's a benchmark that shows X component being X faster than all the other benchmarks, just throw that data set right out the window!
