Tips for how to avoid impulse buying

With so many bargains this summer, you may be tempted to shop on a whim. You’re not alone: A new study finds nearly 90% of Americans make impulse purchases and men spend more on them than women. Charisse Jones, USA Today's national business correspondent, joins “CBS This Morning” to explain why we impulse buy -- and how to break the habit.

Shopping with a list is super helpful, asking "Do I need it?", "What else could I do with the money?" and waiting a day to see if I still want it have all been very helpful. Sometimes it just feels great to pick up something unplanned but I definitely don't make a habit of it anymore. Great tips!

More expensive items like electronics and video games are heavily marketed to men because they will make large impulse purchases without guilt. Lots of smaller items are marketed to women so they don’t realize how much they are spending as it all adds up. You should always shop with a plan or a spending limit. Even just telling yourself you have a max of $200 will help you spend more responsibly.
