Indus valley civilization was contemporary to Egyptian and they had similar graphical script too and they had trade ties with Mesopotamia, but because there's nothing like a rosetta stone found here, it hasn't been deciphered. Just tells how important Rosetta stone was.

What's interesting is that the Rosetta stone was being used as ruble in a part of a building, that for thousands of years the Egyptians took apart and smashed ancient monuments just to use the stone as raw building material. Imagine there could be a stone explaining every lost secret of ancient Egypt, but the stone is currently a floor of a goat farmers shack.
Had it not been for a curious Frenchman, the Rosetta stone could have just been hacked up by a local builder, to be just another random rock in a wall.

Surprised Babbel was happy to sponsor a short about one of their main competitors.

It should be pointed out that while the Rosetta Stone was fundamental to decipher hieroglyphics, knowledge of the Coptic languages (descended from ancient Egyptian) was also extremely important to work out what other inscriptions said.

One of the few times in anthropology we got lucky 😅 for every Rosetta stone theres 200 "we have no idea anything about them except the romans gave a very vague description once"

If only we could find a Minoan Rosetta Stone. I always found it kinda sad that we may never completely know what is written on Minoan manuscripts.

You should cover the Beheading War (aka Federalist Revolt) in Southern Brazil. There is a famous myth about the war, where a rebel, Adão Latorre, beheaded 300 prisioners in one night. He was even nicknamed '"Sinuelo da Morte" by other rebel troops. Would be interesting to see you talk about it

So I get that it would never have been a groundbreaking discovery after finding the Rosetta Stone, but are there any other artifacts we've found since then that would have let us decipher Hieroglyphics if we had never found the stone?
